Crawdads End Road Trip with 7-2 Loss
May 4, 2015 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Hickory Crawdads News Release
Charleston, SC - A Hickory Crawdads team that has been running roughshod over the South Atlantic League through the season's first month experienced their first bump in the road Monday night, as the 'Dads 7-2 loss to the Charleston RiverDogs at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park gave the team their first series defeat of the year.
Entering the fourth and final game of the series, the matchup between the 'Dads and the 'Dogs had been razor thin, with Charleston winning two of the first three but only holding a 7-6 advantage in runs with no team scoring more than four in any game. The final contest played out in much the same way for the first seven frames with the RiverDogs taking a narrow 3-2 lead into the 8th, but a grand slam by 'Dogs center fielder Dustin Fowler broke the game open in the bottom of the 8th and gave the 'Dads their 7-2 defeat.
Charleston jumped out to an early advantage by scoring one run on a hit, two walks, and a sacrifice fly in the 1st for a 1-0 score. Hickory starting pitcher Kelvin Vasquez battled his command for much of the night, with the 6'4" right-hander issuing four walks during his three innings pitched. Crawdads reliever David Perez issued a pair of free passes of his own in the 4th, but worked around the walks to post a scoreless inning and keep the deficit at just one run.
The 'Dads offense was able to break through the following half inning as Ronald Guzman connected on a 2-out, 2-RBI single to center to put the Crawdads ahead 2-1. The lead would not last the frame however, as the RiverDogs used four total walks, a wild pitch, and an error off of Perez and Trey Lambert to plate two runs without a hit and re-take the advantage at 3-2.
The score remained the same until the 8th, when the 'Dogs put the game out of reach with the grand slam for the final 7-2 score.
Guzman finished the game 2-4 with 2 RBI and a walk, while Josh Morgan went 1-4 with a double and a run scored.
Charleston reliever Andre Del Bosque (2-0) was awarded the win despite being the only RiverDog pitcher to allow a run with two runs given up on two hits, two walks, and four strikeouts over two innings pitched. Perez (0-1) took the loss for the 'Dads with two runs allowed on no hits, four walks, and one strikeout. 'Dogs closer Cale Coshow earned his second save of the series and improved to a perfect 7/7 in save opportunities with a scoreless 9th.
The Crawdads (16-8) have an off day on Tuesday before putting their league best record on the line with the start of a three game series at home against the Greensboro Grasshoppers. First pitch Wednesday night is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
