Manitoba Moose News Release
PEORIA, IL. -- Starting with Daniel Rahimi's game-opening goal (the first of his AHL career), the Manitoba Moose scored three in the first two periods and held on for a 4-1 win over the Rivermen in Peoria Tuesday night. With 24 saves, Drew MacIntyre earned his 17th win of the season and second star honours.
Near the five-minute mark of the opening period, Manitoba forward Rick Rypien was dealt the game's first infraction and Peoria's powerplay unit made its debut. But the Moose limited Rivermen scoring opportunities and killed the man-advantage to keep the game scoreless through the period's halfway point.
Moments after concurrent penalties to Alexandre Bolduc and Leo Thomas, a quick face-off and then quick release by Daniel Rahimi resulted in the rookie defenceman's first goal of the season and the first of the game.
Less than a minute after the goal, Manitoba benefited from their first powerplay but were unable to extend their lead and were soon forced back on the penalty kill thanks to a second penalty to Bolduc. At the first period buzzer, the Moose were down a man and three shots but up a goal vs. the Rivermen.
Two minutes into the second, Jannik Hansen and Alex Brooks shared time in the penalty boxes for roughing, followed shortly by Peoria's Nikolay Lemtyugov for holding. Despite the four-on-three, the Moose couldn't beat netminder Marek Schwarz on the powerplay and the club went 0-for-2 on the man-advantage.
Although special teams struggled to score, Brad Moran made it happen during five-on-five play. Installed at Schwarz's stick side, Moran snapped up his own rebound and extended Manitoba's lead to two with a goal at 5:49.
The Moose overtook the shot lead as the period progressed, topping the Rivermen 12 shots to 10 by the 10-minute mark. A third Manitoba powerplay gave the visitors another chance to increase their lead, and Bolduc ensured the man-advantage wouldn't go unnoticed. With help from newly-healthy Ryan Shannon and Colby Genoway, Bolduc beat Schwarz to score Manitoba's third unanswered goal at 13:45.
An exciting breakaway by Mike Brown marked the first few minutes of the third, but Schwarz got the puck caught up in his equipment and kept the Moose from extending their lead.
At the opposite end of the ice, Peoria put extended pressure on MacIntyre and Moose defenceman Maxime Fortunus took a holding penalty during the struggle to clear the puck. Just over a minute into the five-on-four, Julian Talbot flipped the puck over MacIntyre's shoulder to get the Rivermen on the scoreboard at 6:35.
The clubs traded powerplays through the midsection of the final frame, but only the Moose would add to their tally. Centered on the blueline, defenceman Jimmy Sharrow wired the puck off a few bodies and behind Schwarz to put the Moose up 4-1 with seven minutes left on the clock.
Though the Rivermen doubled-up the Moose in third period attempts to overtake the shot count, MacIntyre maintained the score and Manitoba opened up their four-game road trip with a 4-1 victory over Peoria.
LOOKING AHEAD: Manitoba continues their four-game road trip Thursday night in Rockford. The next Moose home games are scheduled for Feb. 12 & 13 vs. Iowa.
NEXT GAME: THURSDAY, FEB. 7 (METROCENTRE - ROCKFORD, IL.)
