Michael Schumacher's top-shelf backhand at 3:47 of overtime secured a 4-3 victory for the Lake Erie Monsters (4-4-0-1) over the Texas Stars (4-2-2-0) before a Quicken Loans Arena crowd of 8,296. Joey Hishon added two goals for the Monsters, and Colin Smith also scored. Calvin Pickard made 33 saves for his second straight win in net. The Monsters are back in action Tuesday night in Rockford, and the game starts at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.
Cody Corbett spotted Joey Hishon cutting up the ice during a Stars line change, and made a picture-perfect pass to send Hishon on a breakaway early in the first period. Hishon scored on a fantastic move, beating Stars goalie Jack Campbell and giving the Monsters a 1-0 lead at 2:02 of the first period. Duncan Siemens also assisted on the goal. Colin Smith scored to give the Monsters a 2-0 lead on a backhand from the side of the goal at 4:34 of the first period, with assists to Michael Schumacher and Mike Sgarbossa.
In the final minute of the first period, John Klingberg scored for Texas to pull the Stars to within a goal, but Hishon had an answer in the second period.
Hishon scored the second period's only goal at the 6:04 mark, netting a sharp angle shot for his second goal of the game and second goal of the season. Trevor Cheek and Andrew Agozzino assisted on the goal. Hishon's goal gave the Monsters a 3-1 lead, but Brendan Ranford scored a power play goal for the stars at 12:55 of the second period to pull Texas to within a goal.
The only goal of the third period was scored by the Stars Brett Ritchie with 20 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.
At 3:47 of overtime, Schumacher came up with the puck after a Texas turnover and scooted to the slot. Schumacher sent a high backhand past the glove hand of Stars goalie Jack Campbell to secure a 4-3 win for the Monsters.
Calvin Pickard stopped 33 of 36 shots in the Monsters net to improve to 3-2-1 on the season. Campbell is 2-1-1 after stopping 20 of 24 shots in net for Texas.
The Monsters are back on the ice Tuesday in Rockford at 8:00 p.m. Eastern. Friday night, the Monsters return home to host Utica at 7:30 p.m. Both games air live on ESPN 850 WKNR.
