Worcester Sharks News Release
Worcester, MA - The Worcester Sharks (5-2-1-0, 11pts) finished up their season long six game home stand (3-2-1-0) with an exciting 5-4 victory over the visiting Hershey Bears (6-3-0-0, 12pts) in front 3,263 fans at the DCU Center on Saturday evening.
Daniil Tarasov (2-0-2), Konrad Abeltshauser (0-2-2), Matt Taormina (0-2-2), and Jeremy Langlois (0-2-2) all had multi point games for Worcester while Troy Grosenick picked up his 5th win of the season in his 8th straight start in goal. Tyler Kennedy, Freddie Hamilton, and Micheal Haley also scored for the Sharks in an entertaining game as the Bears three game winning streak came to an end. The Sharks close out the weekend with a 3pm start on Sunday at the XL Center vs. the Hartford Wolf Pack.
The Bears gave up the first goal of the game for the first time this season as Daniil Tarasov (1st) fired home a loose puck past goaltender Pheonix Copley at 1:50. Hershey tied the score just 14 seconds later after what appeared to be a high stick in front of the Worcester net as Joel Broda (2nd) was credited with the goal. On a conditioning assignment from the San Jose Sharks, Tyler Kennedy (1st) fired a backhander from the right circle into the net after the Hershey netminder misplayed the puck behind the cage at 8:57. No penalties were called in a fast moving opening period as the Sharks took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission as Hershey held an 11-10 shot advantage.
Hershey tied the score again at 5:15 of the 2nd period as defenseman Cameron Schilling (1st) fired a hard low shot through the pads of Grosenick after a faceoff win inside the Worcester zone. Just 62 seconds later, Freddie Hamilton (4th) extended his point streak to four games with a rocket of a shot on a rush from the left wing at 6:17 to put Worcester back ahead 3-2. After a series of heavy checks, Micheal Haley (2nd FM) fought former Shark Mike Moore (2nd FM) in a long scrap at 10:35 in a physical middle frame. Worcester took a 4-2 lead after Daniil Tarasov (2nd) roofed a backhander inside the crossbar from on top of the Hershey crease at 16:30. Worcester outshot Hershey 11-5 in the second period and took a 4-2 advantage into the 2nd intermission.
Worcester went ahead 5-2 as Micheal Haley (5th) struck at 2:00 with a power play goal from on top of the crease which turned out to be the game winner. Kris Newbury (5th) deflected a shot past Grosenick at 4:46 to cut the Sharks lead to 5-3. With the extra attacker on, Steve Oleksy (3rd) got the Bears within a goal with a blast at 18:44. Bears defenseman Tomas Kundratek hit the post with 20 seconds remaining as the Sharks held on for the 5-4 win. The Sharks overall record improves to 5-2-1-0, 11pts and 3-2-1-0, 7pts at the DCU Center.
