Cleveland Monsters News Release
Joey Hishon's goal with 2:38 left in overtime secured a fourth straight victory for the Lake Erie Monsters (10-8-2-2), who topped the Midwest Division leading Rockford IceHogs (16-6-2-1) 4-3 Sunday at BMO Harris Bank Center in Rockford, Illinois. Paul Carey scored twice for the Monsters in regulation, while Max Noreau also registered a goal. Stefan Elliott had two assists for the Monsters, and Calvin Pickard won his third straight start in net. The Monsters visit Grand Rapids Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
Garrett Ross scored the first two goals of the game to give Rockford a 2-0 lead in the game's first 7:46, but the Monsters Paul Carey countered before the first period could end with two goals to even the score. Carey's first goal came on a shot out of the right wing corner, from a nearly impossible angle, at the 12:09 mark of the first period. The goal was the fifth of the season for Carey, and was assisted by Mike Sgarbossa and Markus Lauridsen.
Carey tied the game at 2-2 after a two-on-one rush. Colin Smith worked the puck into the right circle, found Carey in front of the net, and Carey beat Rockford goalie Michael Leighton top-shelf for his sixth goal of the season at the first period's 17:22 mark.
With 2:57 left in the second period, Ross completed his hat trick for Rockford, making the score 3-2. Ross converted on a slap shot from the right boards. Max Noreau tied the game at 3-3 for the Monsters with 17.8 seconds left in the second period when he darted in from the right point and chipped home a loose puck, with assists to Trevor Cheek and Stefan Elliott.
After a scoreless third period, the two teams headed to the seven-minute overtime frame. With the overtime in the three-on-three stage, the Monsters secured the 4-3 victory at the 4:22 mark of the extra frame when Stefan Elliott fed a pass across to Joey Hishon in the right circle, and Hishon sent a one-timer past Leighton for his sixth goal of the season. Borna Rendulic also assisted on the goal.
Calvin Pickard stopped 23 of 26 in his third straight win; he is 6-4-3 on the season. Leighton stopped 22 of 26 shots in falling to 6-4-2 in net for Rockford.
The Monsters are back on the ice Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in Grand Rapids; a game that airs live on AM 1420 'The Answer'.
