Devils Shut out by Flames

Albany Devils News Release

ALBANY, NY -- The second game of the Northway series went to the Adirondack Flames, who downed the Albany Devils, 1-0, Sunday at Times Union Center. Max Reinhart scored the lone goal to halt Keith Kinkaid's unbeaten streak at four games.

The Devils, who went 1-1-0-0 against the Flames this season, moved to 11-8-1-4 overall. Adirondack improved to 14-10-1-0.

"We pushed, but I think the way they skated the first half of the game really took its toll on us," said Head Coach Rick Kowalsky. "We certainly had chances; we certainly had opportunities to tie it up over the course of the game. They wore us out pretty well."

By the end, Albany was left with 10 healthy forwards after Cam Janssen and Scott Timmins both left with injuries.

Kinkaid, who entered the game coming off back-to-back wins and a 3-0-1 record in his last four starts, made 23 saves on 24 shots. He has allowed two or fewer goals in a game seven of 11 starts this year.

"You expect two hard teams trying to tire each other out and whoever has the best conditioning, hopefully, comes away with the win," Kinkaid said about finishing the team's third game in as many days. "But unfortunately we didn't get it tonight, but we played a pretty solid game."

Reinhart's tally came at 17:01 of the first period. Turner Elson gained possession in the Devils end and found Reinhart near the right face-off circle. The Flames center waited and then picked the upper-right corner over Kinkaid's shoulder.

Albany appeared to tie the game at 14:47 of the second period. Graham Black redirected Mark Fraser's point shot, but after a short conference the officials overturned the call on the ice and ruled the puck was played with a high stick.

Kowalsky indicated after the game that the official closest to the play thought it was a good goal, but was overruled on the decision.

"I tried to go hard to the net," Black said. "At the last second, I saw him shooting and it was a natural reaction for me to try and get a stick on that."

Adirondack netminder Joni Ortio benefitted from the non-goal call. He registered his second shutout of the season and 11th victory. He made 28 saves.

The Devils, who owned a 28-25 shot advantage, failed to score a power-play goal for the first time since Nov. 22 at Binghamton. The team went 0-4 against the Flames. The penalty kill went 4-4.

Notes

Albany's penalty kill is 41-44 during the last 12 games ... Prior to puck drop, New Jersey announced that RW-Damien Brunner has been loaned to Albany. Additionally, the NHL Devils recalled D-Peter Harrold.
