Pirates Fall 3-2 to Bruins, Streak Comes to An End

Providence, R.I.- The Providence Bruins (9-11-2-0) handed the Portland Pirates (14-10-0-0) their first loss in the last seven games in a 3-2 decision Sunday afternoon at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. It was a game that got off to a sluggish start for both teams, but was knotted at two by the end of the second period.

There was no scoring in the first period. Rob Flick netted the first goal of the game at 3:35 in the second period, assisted by Spencer Asuchak and Ian White. Five minutes later at 8:47, Asuchak netted one of his own with assists from Cory Kane and Steve Eminger.

The Pirates answered with two goals of their own to tie it up by the end of the second period. Justin Hodgman found the back of the net with a 10:38 power play, assisted by David Schlemko and Dylan Reese. Alex Bolduc knotted up the score 2-2 on another power play at 17:57 with Reese and Schlemko once again earning the assists.

The Bruins got the game winner when Rob Flick scored his second of the night at 8:55 in the third period, assisted by Kane and Asuchak. Despite applying pressure in the Bruins end, the Pirates were unable to answer.

Peter Mannino (0-1-0) was dealt the loss in his first start for Portland since April 15, 2012. Mannino blocked 21 of the 24 shots he faced. Jeremy Smith (6-5-1) manned the net for the Bruins, blocking 26 of 28 Pirates shots.

The Pirates return to Portland on Friday, December 12 for Teddy Bear Toss night at the Cross Insurance Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. against the Manchester Monarchs in a VIP Cup Presented by VIP Tires and Service matchup. They then will hit the road, returning to Providence to play the Bruins at 7:05 on December 13. They will play the Worcester Sharks on Sunday, December 14 at 3:00 p.m at the DCU Center in Worcester, MA.
