Norfolk Admirals News Release

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Norfolk Admirals surrendered the first goal and four more in a 5-2 defeat to the Manchester Monarchs Sunday afternoon at Verizon Wireless Arena.

Norfolk's first period struggles continued Sunday when Jordan Weal stood behind the net and fed Zach O'Brien in front. O'Brien elevated a one-timer up close over Admiral goaltender Ryan Faragher's glove to put the Monarchs in front, 1-0, 5:56 into the opening period. Manchester carried the one-goal advantage into the second frame.

The Admirals and Monarchs split a pair of early second-period goals to raise the count to 2-1. Nic Dowd anticipated a rebound on the power play, which Faragher blocked in his direction to the far side. Dowd jabbed the loose puck into an open left side of the net at 2:54 thanks to work done by Mike Mersch and Andrew Bodnarchuk.

Antoine Laganiere answered for the Admirals to cut the lead in half with a wraparound attempt that banked off a Monarch's skate and past Manchester goalie Patrik Bartosak. Norfolk's response came 17 seconds after the second Monarch marker at 3:11 of the period.

Just over three minutes later, Manchester center Weal extended the lead back to two when he raced down the right side into the Admirals' zone before flicking a wrist shot by Faragher. Weal's 10 th of the year came at 6:32.

Officials assessed eleven total penalties in the second period that produced three goals including one from William Karlsson. At 15:16, Karlsson stood in the left circle and rifled a shot that beat Bartosak to make it 3-2.

Some pushing and shoving after the whistle gave Manchester a man-advantage late in the period and the Monarchs took advantage for their second power-play goal of the afternoon. Another rebound from a shot in the slot found the stick of an opportune Jeff Schultz who flew it over Faragher's left pad. The lead stretched back to two goals with just 28 seconds left in the period.

In the third, Nick Shore carried the puck into Admirals' territory on the right side and crossed the puck to the left to an oncoming Brian O'Neill. O'Neill one-timed a slap shot underneath Faragher, making it 5-2 for the home team 6:49 into the final period.

Manchester took down Norfolk by the same score as Saturday night's contest, and the Monarchs walked away with another 5-2 win.

Ryan Faragher turned away 16 shots on 21 attempts as Patrik Bartosak allowed two goals on 22 shots. Norfolk converted on one of their seven power-play opportunities and Manchester scored twice on six man-advantages.

The Admirals return home to face Charlotte on Wednesday at Scope.
