Amerks Close out Weekend with 3-0 Loss to Marlies
December 7, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release
(Toronto, ON)... The Toronto Marlies scored once in each period and used a 25-save shutout from rookie goaltender Antoine Bibeau to defeat the Rochester Americans by a 3-0 score Sunday afternoon at Ricoh Coliseum. The loss marks the second straight game the Amerks were shutout and extends Rochester's current losing streak to four games.
Veteran forward Matt Ellis finished with a team-high five shots while Nathan Lieuwen stopped 15 of the 17 shots he faced in the losing effort.
First-year Toronto forward Connor Brown assisted on two goals, including the eventual game-winner from Brendan Mikkelson, while Josh Leivo and Matt Frattin also scored for the Marlies. Bibeau keyed the win, stopping all 25 Rochester shots to earn his second shutout of the season and improve to 4-5-0 on the year.
Mikkelson spotted the Marlies to a 1-0 lead at 8:15 of the first period when Brown intercepted a clearing attempt and set the Toronto defenseman up for his third goal of the season. With Toronto applying heavy pressure deep in the Rochester zone, Brown prevented a force-out along the left wing boards and swung a quick pass to Mikkelson, who drifted into the near circle and one-timed the offer past a screened Lieuwen to open the scoring.
Toronto added to its lead late in the middle frame courtesy of a power-play goal from Leivo at 15:48. Brown again would factor in for the Marlies, creating a turnover inside the Rochester blueline before cycling the puck low to Abbott in the left corner. Abbott, wasting no time, delivered a perfect cross-ice feed to Leivo streaking in from the right side and he steered it past Lieuwen to make it a 2-0 game.
In a last-ditch effort to get on the board, Rochester pulled Lieuwen for the extra skater as time approached the final two minutes of regulation, but Frattin sealed the game into the empty net.
The Amerks will play the third game of their four-game road swing on Wednesday, Dec. 10 when they make their first trip of the season to Utica to face-off with the Western Conference-leading Comets. The 7:00 p.m. game between the North Division rivals will be broadcast on FOX Sports 1280 Rochester.
