Cleveland Monsters News Release
STOCKTON, CA - The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, were defeated by the Stockton Heat on Sunday at Stockton Arena in Stockton, CA by a final score of 6-2. With the loss, the Monsters fell to 20-32-4-3 overall this season and with a .398 points percentage, remain alone in seventh place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
Stockton grabbed a 1-0 lead on Sunday when Mike McMurtry buried an even-strength goal at 14:29 of the opening period. In the second, a Cody Goloubef even-strength finish made it 2-0 Heat at 6:04 before Brett Pollock pushed the Stockton edge to 3-0 with a power-play conversion at 10:44.
Shortly thereafter, the Monsters put themselves on the board with a Sam Vigneault extra-man tally at 15:20, assisted by Ryan Collins and Cameron Gaunce, but an unassisted five-on-five strike from Rasmus Andersson sapped Cleveland's momentum at 18:57 and made it 4-1 Heat heading into the final stanza.
In the third, an even-strength finish from Brady Austin at 1:51 drew the Monsters within a pair at 4-2 with Vigneault and Jordan Schroeder notching assists on the play, but the Heat finished strong with back-to-back empty-net goals, from McMurtry at 17:18 and Ryan Lomberg at 19:02, respectively, to claim a 6-2 victory.
Cleveland net-minder Ivan Kulbakov fell to 0-5-0 in net this season despite stopping 20 of the 24 pucks he faced on Sunday while Heat backstop Ryan Faragher improved to 4-1-0 this year by virtue of a 34-save performance.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Wednesday road clash vs. the Ontario Reign with full coverage, live from Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, CA, underway at 10:00 pm on Alt 99.1 and the Monsters Hockey Network.
