Moose Felled at Iowa 4-3

The Manitoba Moose (36-17-4-4) and Iowa Wild (28-18-8-4) met for the third time in nine days on Sunday, this time in Des Moines. The Wild had Manitoba on their heels early, including an unsuccessful, early power play. It wasn't until the 9:38 mark that the Moose recorded a shot on goal. That shot, however, was Mike Sgarbossa's 14th goal of the season when he found some room, a rebound, and a wide-open net. Manitoba's penalty kill unit killed off three more Iowa power plays in the period including consecutive delay of game calls for pucks being shot over the glass. Eric Comrie was impressive in the frame as the Wild outshot the Moose 13-4.
The second period started with Landon Ferraro and the Iowa Wild seemingly tying the game on a delayed Moose penalty. After a review the call was reversed and the Moose went back on the PK, their fifth of the game. Iowa finally solved Comrie with Cal O'Reilly sending one past him from the point. Just over two-and-a-half minutes later, rookie Justin Kloos scored giving Iowa their first lead. Things started to get chippy after that goal, leading to penalties for both clubs and some four-on-four action. It was just 46 seconds later when Mason Appleton flew in from the wing and set up Jan Kostalek who tied the game at three. The penalties continued to come for both teams and Iowa took the lead back on another stretch of four-on four with Ryan Murphy sneaking one past a screened Comrie. It didn't take long for the Moose to answer once again, as Michael Spacek scored from his familiar spot on the power play 1:26 later. As the second period drew to a close, Iowa's Niklas Svedberg got into a confrontation with Patrice Cormier well behind the play. That resulted in Cormier needing medical attention while also taking a two-minute unsportsmanlike conduct call. Svedberg, meanwhile, was given a five-minute major and a match penalty.
The Moose couldn't capitalize on the five-minute major that continued into the third period. Iowa found their second power play goal, and the second of the game for O'Reilly a little over eight minutes into the final frame. The teams traded chances throughout the middle part of the third, with the best opportunity coming to Nic Petan at the side of the net. However, Steve Michalek was perfect taking over for Svedberg. Manitoba pulled Eric Comrie with just under three minutes left in the game leading to nearly two minutes of concentrated pressure with the extra skater, but Iowa held on for the 4-3 win.
