Hershey Bears News Release
(Hershey, PA)- The Hershey Bears were blanked by the Grand Rapids Griffins on Sunday at Giant Center, 3-0. Hershey's defeat marked the second time being shutout in as many nights, and the sixth time shutout by the opposition this season. Tom McCollum turned aside 21 shots for the Griffins for his first cleansheet of the season.
A physical and penalty filled first period reached its boiling point at the 9:06 mark. Liam O'Brien was called for a five minute major for boarding in addition to a fighting major he received after dropping the mitts with Turner Elson. During the ensuing major power play, the Griffins cashed in at 12:16.
After a puck rolled on goal and was poked away by Pheonix Copley, former Bear Matthew Ford fired the loose puck into the net from the left wing for his 21st goal of the season.
Three seconds after the penalty expired, Grand Rapids scored an even-strength goal to double its lead. At 14:09, Ben Street was left unmarked on the side of the net, and the rebound of a Matt Puempel shot hit him in the leg and rolled past Copley. Grand Rapids took a 2-0 lead into the dressing room and also held a 10-6 shot advantage.
After a scoreless second period, the Griffins added insurance in the third frame. Street scored his second of the night at 6:04. Following a defensive zone turnover, Puempel sent another sub-goal line centering pass for an open Street. His second goal of the night rounded out a 3-0 final in front of 9,481 at Giant Center.
Hershey falls to 25-29-4-5 on the year, as Grand Rapids improves to 32-22-1-6 in the Central Division. As the loss was Hershey's sixth via shutout, it tied a club record set for the most shutout losses in a single season. Hershey was also held scoreless six times in 1961-62.
The Hershey Bears return home on Friday, March 16 against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers for Scout Night. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m. Ticket information is available at HersheyBears.com.
