
Monsters Fall in Toronto, 4-1

Three second period goals against were too much to overcome for the Lake Erie Monsters (24-27-0-6) Saturday afternoon, as the Monsters fell to the North Division leading Toronto Marlies (34-19-2-2) by a 4-1 score at Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto. Colin Smith scored the lone goal for the Monsters. Kent Patterson made his first goaltending appearance of the season for the Monsters, who finish their three-games-in-three-days weekend Sunday in Hamilton.
Colin Smith opened the scoring for the Monsters when he cut through the left circle with the puck and sent a shot top shelf to beat Toronto goalie Christoper Gibson. The goal was scored at 13:04 of the first period, and was the seventh of the season for Smith. Michael Schumacher and Karl Stollery assisted on the tally. With just 1:22 left in the period however, and Toronto on a power play, Josh Leivo banged in a rebound from the left circle to tie the game at 1-1 for the Marlies after a Greg McKegg scoring chance hit the goal post.
Toronto added three goals in the second period to take a 4-1 lead. Brandon Kozun banged in a bouncing puck off the end boards from the side of the net at 9:13 of the second period on the power play. Leivo scored a power play goal after a spin move at the top of the goal crease to give Toronto a 3-1 lead at 12:15 of the second period, and then Leivo completed his hat trick on a shot from in front of the net at 19:11 of the second period. Toronto held a 4-1 lead through 40 minutes of play.
The third period did not yield any scoring, and Toronto preserved their 4-1 lead for the final 20 minutes. Kent Patterson made his first start in net in the American Hockey League this season, stopping 34 of 38 shots; he is 0-1-0. Christopher Gibson stopped 21 of 22 Monsters shots, and improved to 3-1-0 on the season in net for the Marlies.
The Monsters visit the Hamilton Bulldogs Sunday at 3:00 PM; a game that can be heard live on AM 1420 WHK.
NOTES: The Monsters are 3-3-0-1 on the season against the Marlies, and the two teams meet again on March 19 in Cleveland... The Monsters are 1-2-0-0 in March... The Monsters are 12-11-0-5 against the North Division this season... Stollery has a three-game assist streak and has an assist in four of his last five games... The Monsters were 0-5 on the power play and the Marlies were 3-9.
