Portland Pirates News Release
Worcester, MA- The Portland Pirates battled back from a 2 goal deficit but were unable to get the tying goal in the final minute of play, dropping a 3-2 decision to the Worcester Sharks. Daine Todd and Jordan Martinook were the goal scorers for the Pirates.
Justin Weller, recalled from Gwinnett earlier in the day, made his AHL debut for the Pirates, while Sam Klassen, who was signed to a PTO on Saturday, also made his Pirates debut. The first period would start with 14 minutes of scoreless action, before a Holding penalty to Klassen gave the Sharks the advantage. Freddy Hamilton scored just 15 seconds into the power play to give Worcester the 1-0 advantage with 5:54 left in the first. The Sharks had 9 straight shots on goal before the Pirates broke that streak on a power play, but Worcester would score again. Brodie Reid extended the Shark's lead with just 1.5 seconds left in the period, with his shot bouncing off the back of Pirates starter Louis Domingue, and the Sharks took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Pirates got a goal back in the second. A Daine Todd slapshot banked off a Worcester defender and past Harri Sateri for his third goal of the year at 11:18 of the second. The Pirates managed 10 shots on goal in the third, but trailed 2-1 heading to the 3rd period.
Eriah Hayes scored an insurance goal at 7:54 of the third to again give Worcester a two goal cushion, which proved very important. With an empty net for the Pirates and 1:14 left in regulation, Jordan Martinook scored his 10th goal of the year, with Phil Lane and Lucas Lessio picking up assists to bring the Pirates within 1. With the net empty again, the Pirates pressured Sateri, but could not score the tying goal. The Pirates fall to 21-27-2-8 on the season and 4-6 against Worcester this season.
