Bass Scores Twice, Leads Falcons Past Phantoms

Glens Falls, New York - The Springfield Falcons (35-18-1-5) defeated the Adirondack Phantoms by the final score of 5-3 Saturday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center behind a three-point and two-goal effort from forward Cody Bass.

Bass scored the eventual game-winning goal at 11:28 of the second period, giving the Falcons a 4-1 advantage at the moment. The Owen Sound, Ontario native added a shorthanded goal at 7:12 of the third period, ripping a wrist shot from the right-wing circle past Adirondack netminder Carson Chubak. For Bass, the goals were his fourth and fifth of the season.

Springfield captain Ryan Craig opened up the game's scoring, burying home a rebound in front at the 13:06 mark of the first period. The tally was Craig's 12th of the season and third in the last two games.

Newly-acquired defenseman Denny Urban scored his first goal of the season at 16:28 of the opening frame, extending the Falcons lead to 2-0. Urban's goal, assisted by Darryl Boyce and Bass, was his first point as a member of the Falcons. The Pittsburgh native finished the contest with a game-high +4 rating.

After Nick Cousins cut the Springfield lead to 2-1 with a power-play goal at 2:06 of the second period, Paul Thompson responded with his eighth goal of the season just 30 seconds later, backhandind a loose rebound into the back of the net. Thompson has registered six points (four goals, two assists) in 13 games since joining the Falcons in February.

Bruno Gevais - at 13:13 of the second period - and Brandon Manning - at 18:49 of the third period - added power-play goals for the Phantoms. Manning's tally came with the extra attacker on the ice, giving Adirondack a 6-on-4 man advantage.

Adirondack went 3-for-7 on the power play, while Springfield went 0-for-5.

Mike McKenna made 26 saves on 29 shots in net for the Falcons, improving to 16-7-1 this season.

Yann Danis started between the posts for the Phantoms but was pulled after allowing four goals on 24 shots in 31:24 of action. Chubak stopped nine of 10 shots in relief.

The Falcons finish their four-game road trip Sunday, March 9 when they visit the Portland Pirates at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine. The team returns to the MassMutual Center Friday, March 14 to host the Albany Devils at 7:00 p.m.
