Hamilton Bulldogs News Release
HAMILTON, ONTARIO - Three unanswered goals in the second period by the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins were the undoing of the Hamilton Bulldogs on Saturday evening as the 'Dogs (25-27-1-4) were edged by the Pens (31-20-3-5) 4-2 at FirstOntario Centre.
Bulldogs forward Gabriel Dumont opened the scoring with just under five minutes to go in the opening frame when he one-timed a pass from forward Martin St. Pierre past Penguins goaltender Peter Mannino for his team-leading 15th goal of the season. Forward Mike Blunden collected a second assist on the play.
Forty-two seconds into the second period, Penguins forward Andrew Ebbett deflected a point shot by forward Nick Drazenovic past 'Dogs netminder Robert Mayer to tie the game 1-1 on the power play. Defenceman Brendan Mikkelson notched a second assist.
Less than two minutes later, Wilkes-Barre / Scranton forward Tom Kostopoulos fired a slap shot past Mayer just three seconds into another power play to give his club a 2-1 lead. Ebbett had the only assist on the sequence.
At 10:59 of the second period, Pens forward Denver Manderson poked home a puck wedged between Mayer's skate and the post to give Wilkes-Barre / Scranton a 3-1 lead. Forward Adam Payerl and defenceman Scott Harrington drew assists on the play.
Blunden drew the 'Dogs to within one on the power play with his 13th goal of the season at 3:53 of the third period, with assists from Dumont and St. Pierre.
With Mayer pulled for an extra attacker, Hamilton pushed to tie late, but Ebbett potted his second goal of the night into the Bulldogs' empty net with 53 seconds to go. Kostopoulos had the only assist.
Mayer made 31 saves on 34 shots in the Bulldogs net in the loss. Mannino made 30 saves on 32 shots for the Penguins in the win.
