St. John's IceCaps News Release
ST. JOHN'S, NL - Adam Lowry scored the game-winner with 25 seconds left in overtime to lift the red-hot St. John's IceCaps to a 3-2 win - their eighth straight - over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Saturday night at Mile One Centre.
Eric O'Dell and Andrew Gordon had the other tallies for St. John's, while Michael Hutchinson stopped 15-of-17 shots to post the win.
The IceCaps also set a new team record by collecting a point in their ninth straight game.
Scooter Vaughan opened the scoring 7:00 into the first period on the man advantage, staking Bridgeport to a 1-0 lead. Taking the cross-ice feed from Alan Quine, Vaughan one-timed a blast from the point that got through Hutchinson to put the visitors on top.
O'Dell tied things up 1-1 at 12:48, when he notched his 16th of the season. After Jason Jaffray's shot was blocked, O'Dell pounced on the loose biscuit in front of the goal and snapped it past Kevin Poulin.
Bridgeport pulled ahead 2-1 just under a minute later, however, on a shorthanded goal from Aaron Ness. Picking up the puck in the neutral zone, Chris Langkow broke into the IceCaps' zone on the rush before setting up Ness in front, who made no mistake in wristing it high off the crossbar and in.
In the second period, Gordon scored the equalizer on the power play just over five minutes in. Stepping into Jaffray's pass, Gordon one-timed a rocket from the blue line into the top-left corner to knot things up at two goals apiece.
After a scoreless third period, Lowry scored the game-winner with 25 seconds left in overtime. Sprung on a partial breakaway by Patrice Cormier, who made a heads-up play to chip the puck ahead, Lowry deked Poulin before backhanding it top shelf to win the game and lift St. John's to the series sweep.
The IceCaps look to extend their win streak to nine Wednesday night (7:30 PM NT), when they take on the Portland Pirates for the first in a three-game series that closes out Friday and Saturday night at Mile One Centre. Catch all the action with broadcaster Brian Rogers on Rogers TV, www.stjohnsicecaps.com and 930 AM, or watch online at www.ahllive.com. Pregame show gets underway a half-hour before puck drop.
