LAST WEEK ¬â¢S HIGHLIGHTS
Vs. Norfolk (1/26): The Manchester Monarchs picked up two points in the standings and maintained their second place position with an exciting win against the Norfolk Admirals, 4-2, at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Wednesday night. Center Marc-Andre Cliche scored two goals for the Monarchs, with centers Oscar Moller and Corey Elkins also chipping in tallies. Right wings Alex Berry and Matt Fornataro collected the goals for the Admirals. Manchester goaltender Jeff Zatkoff (11-11-3) picked up his 11th win of the season stopping 34-of-36 shots. Netminder Dustin Tokarski (10-12-1) of Norfolk stopped 28-of-32 shots on net as he collected his 12th loss of the season. Manchester went 3-for-5 on the power play. Norfolk was 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
At Connecticut (1/28): Three goals in the second period lifted the Manchester Monarchs over the Connecticut Whale and put them back into first place in the Atlantic Division with a 4-2 victory at the XL Center Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Friday night. Left wing Bud Holloway, right wing Brandon Kozun, defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov and right wing John Zeiler lit the lamp for the Monarchs. Center Evgeni Grachev and right wing Dale Weise potted goals for the Whale. Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones (17-5-0) picked up his 17th win of the season, stopping 26-of-28 shots. Connecticut netminder Chad Johnson (14-16-3) stopped 30-of-33 shots on net as he collected his 16th loss of the season. Manchester went 0-for-4 on the power play. Connecticut was also 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
Vs. Bridgeport (1/29): The Manchester Monarchs picked up two points in the standings and maintained their first place position in the Atlantic Division with an exciting win against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 3-2, at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday night. Left wing Richard Clune, center Oscar Moller and defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov tickled the twine for the Monarchs, while defenseman Mark Katic and center Rob Hisey scored for the Sound Tigers. Monarchs goaltender Jeff Zatkoff (12-11-3) picked up his 12th win of the season stopping 31-of-33 shots. Sound Tigers netminder Joel Martin (1-3-0) stopped 19-of-22 shots on net as he collected his third loss of the season. Manchester went 1-for-4 on the power play. Bridgeport was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
MONARCHS NEWS & NOTES
The Manchester Monarchs (30-16-1-3, 64 points) regained sole possession of first place this past week, winning three straight games, to give them a division-leading 64 points on the season. The Portland Pirates (29-14-4-1, 63 points) wrapped up this week ¬â¢s series of games with 63 points, one point behind the Monarchs in second place in the Atlantic Division. The Worcester Sharks (22-18-2-6, 52 points) trail the Monarchs by 12 points, placing third in the seven team Atlantic Division. The Connecticut Whale (22-20-2-5, 51 points) are in fourth place in the division, trailing Manchester by 13 points. The Providence Bruins (22-21-3-1, 48 points) and the Springfield Falcons (22-22-1-3, 48 points) are tied for fifth place in the division with 48 points, while the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (19-23-3-3, 44 points) are in seventh place with 44 points.
Manchester ¬â¢s power play is ranked 13th in the AHL as they have scored 43 goals on 234 opportunities for an 18.4% conversion rate. On the penalty kill, the Monarchs are ranked eighth in the league as they have given up 35 goals when they have been down a man. They have been shorthanded 228 times this season and have an 84.6% penalty kill rating.
Scoring four points in his last three games (2-2=4), defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov (11-25=36) regained the points lead on the Monarchs squad with 32 points.
Voynov also leads American Hockey League defenseman with 36 points on the season.
Named to his second consecutive AHL All-Star game, Voynov participated in the 2011 Reese ¬â¢s AHL All-Star Skills Competition, claiming victory in the Reebok Fastest Skater event with a time of 14.197 seconds. Voynov will also appear in the AHL All-Star Game at the 2011 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Capital BlueCross on Monday night at Giant Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
Left wing Bud Holloway recorded his team-leading 15th goal of the season in Friday ¬â¢s 4-2 win against the Connecticut Whale. He has 34 points (15-19=34) in 49 games to place second on the Monarchs in points.
Holloway scored the game-winning goal during Friday ¬â¢s 4-2 road victory over the Whale.
Center Oscar Moller (11-21=32) collected four points in his last three games (2-2=4), taking sole possession of third place on the Monarchs with 32 points.
Moller tied a franchise record when he recorded five points (1-4=5) in the Monarchs 7-3 win over the Bruins on December 31. He is only the second player in team history to record five points in a game. The other is center Jared Aulin who picked up five assists against Saint John in the Monarchs 7-4 win on December 21, 2002.
In his last five home games, Moller has recorded five goals and seven assists for 12 points (5-7=12).
Moller also has two game-winning goals in his last three games, potting the third goal during both Wednesday ¬â¢s 4-2 win over the Norfolk Admirals and also Manchester ¬â¢s 3-2 win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Sunday.
Overall, Moller has four game-winning goals this season which ties him with center Justin Azevedo (12-15=27) and right wing Brandon Kozun (11-12=23) for seventh place in the league in game-winning goals.
Azevedo (12-15=27) places eighth on the Monarchs with 27 points this season.
Kozun ¬â¢s 23 points are tied for 19th place among rookie scorers in the AHL with 23 points.
Center Andrei Loktionov (8-23=31), recalled by the Los Angeles Kings on January 20, is fourth on the Monarchs in points with 31.
Loktionov leads the team in the plus/minus category with a plus-15.
Loktionov has three points (2-1=3) and two penalty minutes in 11 games with the Kings.
Center Marc-Andre Cliche recorded two goals and three assists for five points (2-3=5) over his last three games, giving him a total of 28 points (114-14=28) on the season.
Cliche ¬â¢s two goals this week has moved him into second place on the Monarchs with 14 tallies this season.
Cliche is tied for fifth place on the Monarchs with center Corey Elkins (13-15=28) and left wing Dwight King (12-16=28), each of whom have recorded 28 points on the season.
Elkins is tied for third place on the Monarchs with left wing David Meckler (13-10=23) in goals with 13 tallies each.
Meckler (13-10=23) is tied with Kozun (11-12=23) for ninth place on the Monarchs with 23 points apiece.
Meckler ¬â¢s 13 goals are tied for second place on the Monarchs squad with Elkins.
Left wing Richard Clune ¬â¢s 165 penalty minutes places him fifth overall in the league in the same category.
Goaltender Jeff Zatkoff has a record of 12-11-3 with a 3.09 goals-against-average and a .901 save percentage in 28 games this season.
Netminder Martin Jones has played in 25 games with the Monarchs and has collected a record of 17-5-0 with a 2.17 goals-against-average and a .930 save percentage.
Alongside Voynov, Jones is a Monarchs representative at the 2011 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Capital BlueCross. Jones participated in the 2011 Reese ¬â¢s AHL All-Star Skills Competition, helping the Eastern Conference to a 19-7 Skills Competition victory.
Jones held opposing shooters scoreless in the Reese ¬â¢s Pass and Score event, making three saves. Jones only allowed 1-of-6 shooters to score during the Panasonic Breakaway Relay, as Milwaukee left wing Linus Klasen scored on Jones following two spins between the hashmarks.
