LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS
Vs. Hartford (11/11): Defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov ricocheted the puck off a defender and into the net to edge the Manchester Monarchs past the Hartford Wolf Pack, 2-1, at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Wednesday night. Defenseman Andrew Campbell also scored for the Monarchs in the third period. Right wing P.A. Parenteau scored the lone goal for the Wolf Pack. Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier (7-3-1) got back on track at home stopping 26-of-27 shots. Wolf Pack netminder Chad Johnson (6-4-0) saved 22-of-24 shots. Manchester went 1-for-7 on the power play. Hartford went 1-for-5 with the man advantage.
At Hartford (11/13): Hartford Wolf Pack's netminder Chad Johnson picked up his second shutout of the season by blanking the Manchester Monarchs, 2-0, at the XL Center on Friday night. Right wing Derek Couture and left wing Dane Byers tallied for the Wolf Pack. Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier (7-4-1) took his fourth loss of the season with 23 saves on 25 shots. Johnson (7-4-0) earned his seventh win and his second shutout of the season stopping all 26 shots. Manchester went 0-for-2 on the power play. Hartford went 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
At Binghamton (11/14): The Manchester Monarchs narrowly escaped with two points in a 6-5 shootout against the Binghamton Senators at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena on Saturday night. The Monarchs picked up goals from center Justin Azevedo, center Corey Elkins (2), center Oscar Moller and right wing Brandon Segal in regulation. Azevedo and Moller's shootout goals stood tall for the win. Right wing Ryan Kellar, left wing Denis Hamel, center Martin St. Pierre, left wing Kaspars Daugavins and defenseman Craig Schira scored in regulation for the Senators. Hamel is the lone shooter that scored in the shootout. Monarchs goaltender Jeff Zatkoff (4-1-0) earned his fourth win with 40 saves on 45 shots and four saves in the shootout. Senators netminder Mike Brodeur (5-3-1) took his first shootout loss with 30 saves in regulation and overtime and three in the shootout. Manchester went 0-for-1 on the power play. Binghamton went 2-for-4 with the man advantage.
NEWS & NOTES
The Manchester Monarchs (11-4-1-1, 24 points) are in first place in the Atlantic Division with 24 points and are tied for third overall in the AHL behind the Texas Stars (12-2-2-2, 28 points) and the Rochester Americans (13-2-1-0, 27 points).
The Monarchs are 7-1-0-0 at the Verizon Wireless Arena this season with their only loss coming at the hands of the Hershey Bears on Saturday, November 7. Manchester won their first six home games this season.
Manchester ended their four game winless road streak with a 6-5 shootout win over the Binghamton Senators on Saturday night. It was the team's first shootout win of the season.
The Monarchs penalty kill ranks fourth in the AHL. They have given up six goals when their opponent has been on the power play in 75 attempts.
Manchester has been outshot by their opponent 14-of-17 games thus far this season. The three games that the Monarchs led in the shots category was a 2-0 shutout by the Hartford Wolf Pack on November 13 at the XL Center, their 6-1 victory over the Springfield Falcons on October 18 at the Verizon Wireless Arena and a 3-2 overtime loss to the Wolf Pack on Sunday, November 1 in Hartford.
The Monarchs and the Stars have given up the lowest number of goals to their opponents in the league. Monarchs goaltenders Jonathan Bernier and Jeff Zatkoff have stopped all but 31 shots they have faced this season.
Rookie center Andrei Loktionov leads the Monarchs in points with 14 (5-9=14).
Loktionov's 14 points are also tied for first among the AHL's rookies.
Right wing Scott Parse was recalled by the Los Angeles Kings on Friday, October 23 and made his NHL debut on Saturday, October 24 in Phoenix against the Coyotes. He collected his first NHL point, an assist, in his debut and then tallied his first NHL goal in the Kings 2-1 loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday, October 29. Parse has three points (1-2=3) in 11 games with the Kings.
Parse ranks third on the Monarchs in scoring with 11 points (2-9=11) and his nine assists are tied with Loktionov to lead Manchester.
Parse was on a three-game assist and point streak with four assists and six points prior to his call-up on Friday, October 23.
Center Oscar Moller scored a penalty shot goal in the Monarchs 2-1 win over the Providence Bruins on Friday, October 30. The last time the Monarchs had a penalty shot was April 4, 2009 against Worcester when left wing Matt Moulson failed to score against goaltender Thomas Greiss. The Monarchs last scored on a penalty shot on February 26, 2005 when center Matt Ryan scored against Hartford's netminder Steve Valiquette. All-time, the Monarchs have scored five goals on 26 penalty shots.
Moller's penalty shot goal on Friday, October 30 served as the game-winner giving him three game-winning goals which is tied for first place in the AHL.
Moller is ranked second on the Monarchs with 12 points (6-6=12). He is also tied with Parse for the team lead in the plus/minus category with a plus-8.
Right wing Brandon Segal (3-6=9) is ranked fourth on the Monarchs roster.
Center Corey Elkins' two goals and one assist for three points in Saturday's 6-5 shootout win over the Senators bumped him up to a tie for fifth place on the Monarchs roster with defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov (4-4=8) with eight points (5-3=8).
Bernier has a record of 7-4-1 in his first 12 games of the season. His seven wins are tied for fifth place in the AHL.
Bernier is ranked fifth in the league with a 1.65 goals-against-average and is ranked third with a .951 save percentage.
In five games with the Monarchs, Zatkoff is ranked fourth in the AHL with a 1.58 goals-against-average and a .956 save percentage which is good for second place in the AHL.
