Hershey Bears News Release
The HERSHEY BEARS Hockey Club heads into action this week winners of eight of its last nine games and with a healthy six-point lead over second place Wilkes- Barre/Scranton. The BEARS defeated the Norfolk Admirals 5-3 and the Penguins 3-1 in home games this past Friday and Saturday.
After a trip to Binghamton this Friday night at 7:05 p.m., HERSHEY returns home Saturday to face Springfield Falcons at 7:00 p.m. The visit by the Falcons marks the only visit by the AHL affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers to central PA this season. Tickets are on sale now at the GIANT Center box office or by calling (717) 534-3911.
Alzner's first a game-winner: Defenseman Karl Alzner scored what proved to be the game- winning goal Saturday night as HERSHEY claimed a 3-1 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at GIANT Center. Alzner became the eighth player this season to score a game- winning goal for the BEARS this season.
"The Mayor" recalled: Former BEARS defenseman Dean Arsene was recalled for the first time to the NHL this past Saturday. Arsene, who is the captain of the Springfield Falcons this season, earned his first call to the NHL when the Edmonton Oilers called him up. The Abbotsford, BC native was a healthy scratch Sunday for the Oilers in Atlanta.
Practice schedule: HERSHEY will skate at GIANT Center Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week for practice at 10:00 a.m. The players and coaches are available for interviews after practice all three days prior to Friday's home game against Norfolk.
Opening up a little daylight: HERSHEY begins the new week with a six-point lead over second place Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the East Division. The margin is the second biggest lead enjoyed by any AHL division leader heading into the new week. Only the Texas Stars (seven points over second place Peoria in the West Division) has a bigger lead in the standings.
Washington update: The Capitals travel to the Big Apple Tuesday night to face the Rangers at Madison Square Garden, completing a two-game road trip. Washington returns home this Thursday to host the Montreal Canadiens at Verizon Center. The Caps are tied for the top spot in the Eastern Conference with the New Jersey Devils at 28 points apiece.
