WEEK IN REVIEW
The Monarchs played host to the Orlando Solar Bears for the first time in franchise history over the weekend, and came out with a 1-0-1-1 record against their Eastern Conference rivals.
Friday night, the Monarchs dropped their first ever game to Orlando, 3-2, in overtime. The teams traded goals over the course of the game, with Joey Diamond and Danick Paquette notching the Manchester goals. The game went into overtime, but Rory Rawlyk ended things on a tip-in, 1:24 into the extra period.
The Monarchs came back strong Saturday night, beating the Solar Bears, 3-1, on American Pride Night at the Verizon Wireless Arena. The Monarchs got out to a fast start, a scored three unanswered goals. Matt Fornataro was the first to light the lamp for the monarchs, followed by the 7th and 8th goals of the season for Mark Anthoine. Orlando would scrape together a late goal, but it wasn't enough to beat Michael Houser in his second game since being assigned to the Monarchs by the Ontario Reign.
Sunday afternoon, the Monarchs finished their series with Orlando, falling in a shootout, 3-2. The Monarchs came out flying, scoring two goals in the first period. Zac Larraza netted his 14th goal of the season in his 26th game, and Diamond stayed hot, scoring his 16th of the year. But two third period goals forced overtime with Nicklas Lindberg netting the lone shootout goal to secure a 3-2, come-from-behind win for the Solar Bears.
WHERE WE STAND
The Monarchs begin an important week inside the East Division locked in a virtual tie with the Toledo Walleye for the lead in the Eastern Conference with 79 points, five points ahead of the Florida Everblades. The Monarchs hold a seven-point division lead over the Adirondack Thunder, and a 15-point advantage over the Royals and Jackals.
LEADING THE WAY
Joey Diamond leads the Monarchs in points with 42 (16g, 26a). Yann Sauvé now sits in second place with 29 points (7g, 22a) and Derek Arnold is in third with 26 points (14g, 12a). Colin Stevens returns from the AHL leading the Monarchs in wins (15), minutes (1280), GAA (2.39), save percentage (0.920%) and shutouts (2) in his first professional season.
RACE FOR FIRST
The Adirondack Thunder will make their seventh visit to the Jungle this season Tuesday night (7p.m.), with the Monarchs holding a 4-2-0-0 record against the Thunder on home ice. Tuesday will mark the twelfth matchup between these division rivals. The Monarchs have had good success against their closest division rivals recently, winning the last four meetings between the two clubs, with the last victory coming February 24, a 3-2 win. On the season, the Monarchs are 6-5-0-0 against the Thunder.
RORAL TREATMENT
The Reading Royals make their return to the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday and Saturday nights (7p.m.). The Royals have split the previous four contests from the Jungle and will play their final two regular season games in Manchester this week. The Monarchs hold a 4-3-0-0 record against Reading this season and in the last meeting between the teams, Reading fell to Manchester, 4-3, February 20.
PRAYING ON JACKALS
The Elmira Jackals also make their final visit to the Jungle on Sunday afternoon (3 p.m.) The Jackals have had good success this season against the Monarchs, posting a 5-2-0-1 record against Manchester and a 2-2-0-0 record at the Verizon Wireless Arena. The two teams last met February 21, with Manchester taking the game, 3-2, and the Monarchs hold a 5-2-0-1 record against Elmira this season.
MAX'S SUPERHERO BIRTHDAY
The Monarchs will be celebrating Max's 15th birthday Saturday, Mar. 12, when they play the Royals! Max and his superhero friends will be having an evening long celebration, and you're invited to the biggest party of the season. Superman, Batman and all of your favorites will be in attendance, and fans will receive a Max Superhero Bobblehead on their way into the game.
