Manchester Monarchs News Release

NORFOLK, Va. - A hat-trick from Stefan Legein and a seventh round shootout goal by Michael Boivin helped the Manchester Monarchs survive a late comeback by the Norfolk Admirals and win, 6-5, on Black Friday from Scope Arena.

The Monarchs (11-7-0-0) push their record to 4-0-0-0 against the Admirals (5-13-0-1) this season.

Norfolk got the scoring started when newly signed (Nov. 27) forward, Nicolas Blanchard, broke the seal at 2:51 of the first period. Blanchard had two cracks at the puck in front of Monarchs goaltender, Michael Houser, and finished his second opportunity through the five-hole to score his first goal of the season.

Matt White brought the Monarchs back to even, scoring his team-leading 9th goal at 6:08 of the period. White stole a pass at the left point, skated down the boards to the face-off circle, and ripped a wrist shot over the right shoulder of Norfolk goaltender, Ty Rimmer, making the game 1-1.

Legein put the Monarchs on top when he scored his 3rd goal of the season at 6:03 of the second period. Matt Leitner battled for the puck in the left corner, found a streaking Legein with a no-look backhand pass and Legein fired a wrister past Rimmer, high blocker, for the 2-1 lead.

Legein scored his second goal of the night at 14:19 on the power play. Maxim Kitsyn tried to swing the puck around the glass from the right boards, but a funny bounce deposited the puck on Legein's stick in the slot and the forward beat Rimmer again high to the stick-side.

David Kolomatis got into the scoring, potting his 5th goal of the season at 16:37 of the second frame. The captain took a pass from White and went on a breakaway on Rimmer. Kolomatis beat Rimmer glove side for the 4-1 lead.

Steven Whitney brought the Admirals to within two when he scored his 4th of the season at 17:55. After a huge scrum in front of the net, Whitney banged home the puck seconds before the net became dislodged, to put the game at 4-2.

Whitney inched the Admirals closer, scoring his second goal of the night :38 seconds into the third period. Whitney sent a wrist shot from the left point through traffic that beat Houser over his right shoulder.

Blanchard tied the game up with his second goal of the night at 7:49. After heavy pressure in the Monarchs end, Blanchard found a loose puck and ripped home a shot past Houser to bring the game back to even.

Legein completed the hat-trick at 10:25 of the third period, giving the Monarchs a one-goal lead again. Leitner skated down the left boards and took a high stick, but stayed with the play and sent a pass to Legein at the bottom of the slot, where Legein lifted the puck over the glove of Rimmer, for his third goal of the night.

Norfolk wouldn't go quietly, as Alexandre Ranger tied the game up at 17:54, scoring his 6th goal of the season. Ranger took a shot from Houser's right that hit the side of the net and proceeded to collect his own rebound. After swinging around the net, he then swept the puck towards Houser, but the puck ricocheted off the skate of a Monarchs defender into the net.

After an overtime period that went scoreless, despite power play opportunities by both teams in the extra period, the game went to a shootout.

David Kolomatis extended the game in the 3rd round of the shootout with a do-or-die goal, and Michael Boivin ended the game in the 7th round, beating Rimmer after a deke to the backhand, finishing just over Rimmer's outstretched, left pad.

The Monarchs finish their four-game holiday-week road trip, Saturday (7:15 p.m.), as they take on the Norfolk Admirals for the fifth time this season.
