Brampton Beast News Release
TOLEDO, OH - Brampton Beast goaltender Sean Bonar was sensational in his Beast debut and made 28 saves, but the Toledo Walleye dug deep and came away with a 4-1 win over the Beast at the Huntington Center in Toledo on Friday night.
Chris Auger scored the lone Beast goal in the second period, while Marek Tverdon, Austin Wuthrich, Tyler Sikura and Beau Schmitz replied for Toledo, pushing their winning streak to three games.
After a scoreless opening frame, the Beast got the scoring started in the second period as Luke Pither dug the puck free from behind the net and sent a perfect pass to a streaking Chris Auger, who one-timed a quick shot behind Walleye starter Jeff Lerg with 12:59 to go in the second period.
Beast starter Bonar took control and stood on his head to open the game and made several big saves, including 10 in the first period alone, energizing his teammates and keeping the game close.
The Walleye clawed their way back later in the second period as Tverdon located a loose puck during a flurry in the crease and swept it home for his seventh of the season at 14:17.
Toledo took the lead late in the second period as Wuthrich was awarded a penalty shot with 1:27 left in the second period. He skated down the middle of the ice and beat Bonar low along the ice, giving Toledo a 2-1 lead late in the second period.
Toledo pushed their lead to 3-1 just over two minutes into the third period. Bonar's solid play kept the Beast alive late into the third period.
In the other net, Lerg was near unbeatable down the stretch and stopped 24 of 25 shots he faced.
Beast Head Coach Colin Chaulk pulled his goaltender with approximately three minutes left in the game, which gave the Beast a 6-on-5 edge for the remainder of the game, but Schmitz found the empty net in the final minute to seal the win for Toledo.
Notes: The Beast were a perfect 2-for-2 on the penalty kill and have now killed off 21 consecutive penalties. The Beast were not awarded a power play. Molson Three Stars: 3) Marek Tverdon 2) Jeff Lerg 1) Austin Wuthrich
