Steelheads' strong defensive effort slows Rush

Idaho Steelheads News Release
Rapid City, SD - The Steelheads took a 2-1 lead late in the first period and never looked back, as the Steelheads (6-9-4) topped the Rapid City Rush (8-5-2), 3-1 at Rushmore Civic Center.
It was the Steelheads' first regulation win since November 2nd in Utah, and pushed them to 2-4-2 on this season-long nine-game trip.
The Steelheads were playing their first game this season without leading scorer Colton Beck, who was loaned to AHL Iowa on Thursday. The Steelheads needed to find depth scoring options, and two team leaders answered the bell.
After Taylor Doherty opened the scoring for Rapid City with his third goal of the season just 3:19 into the game, the Steelheads responded with a power play goal from Jefferson Dahl at 8:35, his seventh goal of the season.
The Steelheads' power play was 0-for-5 and surrendered a shorthanded goal on Wednesday night, but it certainly came through on Friday. Dahl battled between the circles and found a loose puck in traffic to lift a backhander over an outstretched Danny Battochio in the Rush crease. Dahl's last three goals have all come via the power play.
At 17:52 of the first, Carson McMillan fired a wrist shot just as he entered the offensive zone to beat Battochio with his third goal of the season and first in twelve games. It held up to be the game-winner, cemented by Emil Molin's fifth goal of the season into an empty net in the final minute of regulation.
Idaho outshot the Rush heavily for the second straight night, 34-14 for the game and 11-2 in the third period. The Rush did have their chances, hitting several posts in the final frame, but Philippe Desrosiers made 13 saves for his third win of the season, all on the road.
He also got some help from a solid Steelheads penalty kill, also much improved from Wednesday night, going 5-for-5. The win was the Steelheads' second this year when outshooting an opponent and third this season when trailing first.
The Steelheads and Rush play the rubber match of their series on Saturday night with puck-drop scheduled for 7:05 pm MT, heard on 1350AM KTIK.
