WHEELING, W. Va. - The Manchester Monarchs lost to the Wheeling Nailers Saturday night, 5-2, at WesBanco Arena.

The Monarchs (40-23-3-3) were unable to comeback against the Nailers (34-27-8-1), and lost their third straight game, 5-2.

Wheeling opened the scoring at 4:56 of the first period on the 14th goal of the season by Troy Josephs. Reid Gardiner skated down the right wing and slid a pass to the top of the crease, where Josephs tipped the puck past the right pad of Monarchs goaltender, Evan Cowley, to make the score, 1-0.

Manchester answered just :40 seconds later at 5:36 of the first period on the 6th goal of the season by Keegan Iverson. Ashton Rome chased a puck down in the right corner and sent a pass towards goal that was deflected off a stick in front, right to Iverson, who backhanded a shot over the blocker of Nailers goaltender, Adam Morrison, to tie the game, 1-1.

The Nailers regained the lead at 17:24 of the first period, on a shorthanded goal by Cam Brown, scoring his 16th goal of the season. Josephs created a turnover in the defensive end and skated in on a 3-on-2, finding Brown at the top of the left circle, where he wristed a shot over the blocker of Cowley, to give Wheeling a 2-1 lead.

Wheeling added to their lead on the power play at 3:04 of the third period on the 28th goal of the season by Gardiner. Kevin Schulze pushed a pass to Nick Sorkin along the right wall, where Sorkin sent a cross-ice pass, connecting with Gardiner at the side of the left circle, where he took a wrist shot past the glove of Cowley, to make the score, 3-1.

The Nailers made it a three-goal game at 4:16 of the third period on the 8th goal of the season by Sorkin. Josephs chased the puck into the offensive zone below the goal line, where he backhanded a pass into the slot to Sorkin, who wristed a shot over the glove of Cowley, to make the score, 4-1.

Wheeling extended their lead at 10:39 of the third period on the 22nd goal of the season by Riley Bourbonnais. Brown circled out of the right corner and left the puck at the bottom of the right circle for Bourbonnais, who snuck a shot between the legs of Cowley, that crept over the goal line, to make the score, 5-1.

Manchester cut into the lead with a power-play goal at 14:16 of the third period on the 24th goal of the season by Spencer Watson. Rob Hamilton carried the puck along the blue line before passing off to Alexx Privitera at the top of the left circle. Privitera sent the puck, cross ice, to Watson, who walked in to the right circle and fired a shot over the glove of Morrison to make the score, 5-2.

The Monarchs return to the ice Friday, Apr. 6 (7:00 p.m.) when they take on the Adirondack Thunder from Cool Insuring Arena.
