Manchester Monarchs News Release

MANCHESTER, NH - Manchester Monarchs Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations, Rich Seeley, announced today that the team has hired former Monarchs goaltender, Steve Mastalerz, as its new goaltending coach.

"We are very excited to add Steve to our staff as our goaltending coach," said Monarchs Head Coach, Rich Seeley. "His passion for teaching and commitment to excellence will only enhance the development of our goaltenders here in Manchester."

Steve, a long-time student of Mike Buckley, President of Goaltending Development Services, played youth hockey for Top Gun before heading to Kimball Union Academy where he was one of prep school hockey's best goaltenders. Following KUA, Steve received a scholarship at UMass-Amherst where he made an immediate impact as a freshman. In his professional coaching career, Mastalerz has worked with many professional and collegiate goaltenders.

"I am looking forward to help the development of the goaltenders here in Manchester this season, along with helping to create a positive experience both on and off the ice, something I received when playing in this city."

In four years at UMass, Mastalerz appeared in 77 games and logged a 3.12 goals-against average and a .894 save percentage. The North Andover, Mass., native posted 20 wins and four shutouts, which ranks fourth in program history, while his career saves total (1,953) is fifth all-time in the UMass record book.

Mastalerz is a five-time Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week, set UMass' Division I single game saves record, sixth-most in NCAA history, with 75 stops in the Minutemen's five-overtime victory at Notre Dame on March 6, 2015 in the Hockey East Tournament.

After graduating from UMass, Mastalerz signed a contract with the Monarchs prior to the 2015 Calder Cup Playoffs, and served as the back-up in the Calder Cup Finals clinching game, the first championship in Monarchs history.

"I am very excited to be back with the Monarchs again. As a part of the Calder Cup winning team, I take great pride in the Monarchs organization and all of the relationships I was able to form with the players, LA Kings personnel and the entire Manchester family."
