Mavericks Claim Comeback Victory Again

November 21, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kansas City Mavericks News Release

ORLANDO, Fla. - On Monday night in Orlando the Missouri Mavericks erased a third-period deficit to claim victory after regulation for the second game in a row. Sam Povorozniouk, who scored the shootout winner in Florida last Saturday, capped Missouri's 4-3 overtime win with his seventh goal of the season and helped the Mavericks improve their record to 6-7-1.

After playing from behind for much of Saturday's game against the Everblades, the Mavericks turned the tables and notched the opening goal. Justin Selman took advantage of Orlando goalie Kasimir Kaskisuo losing his footing while out of the crease and guided the puck into an open net with 3:30 gone by. The unassisted goal was Selman's second of the season. Orlando poured on the offense in an effort to even the score and out-shot the Mavs by a 20-6 count in the period. Denver Manderson broke through on the Bears' 15th shot of the frame with a one-timer from the slot that beat Ville Husso at 16:08. The Mavericks won some momentum back for the start of the second by killing off a late high-sticking penalty.

Orlando dictated play early in the second period and at one point had a 7-1 shot advantage as the period neared its midway point. The persistence paid off when Joe Perry jammed home a loose puck at 13:08 to give the Solar Bears their first lead of the night. Former Mavericks captain Trevor Ludwig picked up his first point of the season with the primary assist. Exactly five minutes later the Mavericks pulled even thanks to a hustle play by Selman. He beat the Orlando defense to a loose puck low on the left wing and centered a pass to a trailing Rocco Carzo. Carzo sniped a shot over Kaskisuo's glove for his third of the season.

The Mavericks had some power play time carry over to the start of the third thanks to a slashing penalty by Daniel Maggio with 20 seconds left in the second. They were unable to convert the power play into a goal but did carry the play for a majority of the first half of the third. Despite their best efforts the Mavs couldn't edge back in front and saw Orlando reclaim the lead when Manderson sniped a shot from the right-wing hash at 10:56.

That left the Mavericks in comeback mode for the second straight game, and for the second straight game they answered the bell. Much like Manderson's go-ahead goal, the Mavericks tied it on a sniped shot from outside the hash. Dane Fox, the Mavericks' leading point getter edged down the left wing and blistered a shot over Kaskisuo's shoulder with 2:53 left in regulation. That tied the game and led to a furious sequence in overtime.

Kevin Tansey missed the net wide less than a minute into the extra frame which led to a 2-on-0 rush the other way for Orlando. Husso made a left pad save on the breakaway attempt and Povorozniouk collected the rebound with open ice ahead of him. The rookie forward took it coast-to-coast and used a deke to the backhand to fool Kaskisuo and give the Mavericks their third straight win.

Husso picked up his first ECHL win with a 47-save effort. The Mavericks ended the night 0-for-1 on the power play and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill.
