Carolina Mudcats News Release
Jacksonville, FL --- Lee Mitchell homered and drove in four runs to lead the Jacksonville Suns by the Carolina Mudcats 8-5 at the Baseball Grounds on Thursday night.
Mitchell tripled in the first two runs of the game against starter Travis Webb (L, 6-8) in the first inning, then socked a tie-breaking homer with a man on in the fifth as the Mudcats (21-26) fell into last place in the Northern Division.
Carolina battled back from a 3-0 first inning deficit to take the lead 4-3 on a Sean Henry single, but Webb permitted a pair of fifth inning homers to Vinny Rottino and Mitchell.
In the second inning, Denis Phipps connected for a two-run homer against Suns starter Brad Stone, then Kris Negron took Stone deep in the third to tie the game 3-3.
Webb worked 4 1/3 innings, permitting six runs on seven hits in absorbing the defeat.
The series continues Friday night with James Avery opposing Jacksonville right-hander Tom Koehler at 7:05 PM ET.
