Smokies Winning Streak Ends with 5-3 Loss
August 12, 2010 - Southern League (SL1)
Knoxville Smokies News Release
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies saw their season-long eight game winning streak come to an end, losing 5-3 to the Chattanooga Lookouts in the first game of the five-game series at AT&T Field on Thursday night.
The loss is Tennessee's first since August 3, however the Smokies will maintain an over five-games lead in the second half North Division standings.
Starter Chris Carpenter took the loss for Tennessee. Carpenter pitched five and two-thirds innings, while giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits. Carpenter also walked four batters while striking out seven as he falls to 8-6 in 2010. David Pfeiffer picked up the win for Chattanooga to improve to 6-3.
Brandon Guyer extended his hitting streak to 16 games in the top of the second when he hit a solo homer to give Tennessee a 1-0 lead.
While the Smokies held the early advantage, the Lookouts quickly struck back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead over Tennessee.
In the top of the fourth, Guyer once again homered to put the Smokies back ahead. He hit a two-run bomb to left field to put the Smokies ahead 3-2.
A bizarre bottom of the sixth inning gave the Lookouts the lead back. With runners at first and second, Carpenter was intentionally walking Matt Wallach when one of his pitchout tosses missed his catcher's glove, and the wild pitch allowed Jerry Sands to score to tie the game.
The Lookouts took the lead on an infield RBI single by Pfeiffer and then added another run on a missed catch error by reliever Luke Sommer to take a 5-3 advantage after six innings of play.
The Smokies failed to score in the late innings, and John Huber retired Tennessee's batters in order in the ninth to earn the save and preserve the 5-3 Chattanooga victory. Huber now has 14 saves this season in the Southern League.
The clubs will play the second game of the series on Friday night at AT&T Field. Chris Rusin will make his third start for the Smokies. Rusin is 1-1 with a 1.64 ERA in two Tennessee starts. Will Savage (0-0, 8.31 ERA) will pitch for the Lookouts. The game begins at 7:15 p.m., and fans can listen to the contest on the Smokies Radio Network.
