Mitchell Blasts Suns Past Carolina

Jacksonville, Fla. - Lee Mitchell went three-for-four with four RBI and finished a double short of the cycle, leading the Jacksonville Suns (68-47, 28-19) to an 8-5 win over the Carolina Mudcats (51-65, 21-26) in front of 4,961 Thursday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

Suns reliever Steven Cishek (3-1) picked up the winning decision, giving up one run and two hits over two innings of work. Mudcats starter Travis Webb (6-8) took the loss, giving up six runs and seven hits over four and one-thirds innings. Kris Harvey (3) saved the game with a scoreless ninth inning.

Jacksonville opened an early 3-0 lead in the first inning with a two-out, two-run triple from Lee Mitchell and RBI double from Tim Torres.

Carolina chipped away at the lead starting in the second inning. Following a Sean Henry leadoff single, Denis Phipps belted a two-run home run to left field to cut the Suns lead to 3-2. The Mudcats tied the game in the third inning as Kristopher Negron belted a solo home run for a 3-3 score.

The Mudcats gained the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Negron was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, stole second base, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a Sean Henry single for a 4-3 Carolina lead.

Jacksonville answered right away in the bottom of the fifth. Vinny Rottino hit a one-out, solo home run to tie the game 4-4. After a Matt Dominguez walk, Mitchell unloaded a two-run home run over the left field lawn for a 6-4 lead.

The Suns added a seventh run in the sixth inning on an Ozzie Martinez groundout for a 7-4 lead. Carolina cut the lead to 7-5 with an unearned run in the seventh inning on a bases loaded walk after a two-out error.

Jacksonville added an insurance run in the eighth inning with a Ryan Curry sacrifice fly for an 8-5 final.

Suns RH Tom Koehler will face Mudcats LH Travis Webb in game two of the series Friday at 7:05 p.m. ET.
