Mobile BayBears News Release

MOBILE, Ala. - A five-run first inning coupled with two more tallies in the bottom of the second proved to be enough offense for the BayBears on Thursday night at Hank Aaron Stadium as they defeated the Birmingham Barons, 8-6, to start a five-game series.

Evan Frey commenced the contest with a bunt single against Birmingham (42-75, 18-29) starter Justin Edwards (3-8). Frey reached second when Eduardo Escobar bobbled a grounder off the bat of Ollie Linton. After Collin Cowgill walked to load the bases, he was nearly picked off first by Edwards, but Frey darted toward the plate while Christian Marrero's throw home got away, allowing Frey to score.

Bryan Byrne followed with a two-run single to bring home Linton and Cowgill. Byrne was pushed to the plate by a two-run from Taylor Harbin. The BayBears (62-52, 26-20) quickly tacked on to their advantage in the second as Konrad Schmidt cracked a two-run tater.

Bryan Henry (6-3) remained in command of a 7-0 cushion through the first four frames before running into a Birmingham buzzsaw in the fifth. John Shelby and Dale Mollenhauer each doubled home a run while Justin Greene smacked a two-run homer to right as he pulled the Barons within three. Birmingham drew even closer after Tyler Kuhn singled and scored on a two-bagger by Escobar.

Henry made it through the fifth to qualify for the victory before Bryan Augenstein took over in the sixth. Augenstein teetered for 3.1 innings while scattering seven hits. He didn't give up a run until the ninth when Kuhn walked and came home on a hit by Marrero. By then, Daniel Stange (S, 6) was in the ballgame and picked off Salvador Sanchez at first to end it. With Montgomery's loss on Thursday in Mississippi, the BayBears' lead for the final playoff spot in the South Division extended to 2.5 games.

The BayBears take on the Barons in game two of their five-game set on Friday night at 7:05 with a post-game fireworks show set as part of the BayBears' Friday Night Fireworks series.
