Minard named ECHL Player of the Week
March 1, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â Aces winger Chris Minard has been named the In Glas Co ECHL Player of the Week for February 21-27, joining Florida forward Damian Surma as the only two-time winners of the award thus far in 2004-05.
Minard, who also was honored January 3-9, helped the Aces earn seven of a possible eight points during a week in which the team traveled more than 4,000 miles to earn victories in three different time zones and eventually claim first place in the West Division for the first time all season. He began the week by scoring two goals in a 6-2 rout of Toledo February 23, the second of which three seconds after a goal by teammate Chris Heisten, tying an ECHL record for the fastest two goals in league history.
The 23-year-old Minard followed up that effort with his second hat trick of the season the very next night, including the game-winner with 6:58 remaining in an eventual 6-4 come-from-behind victory over Peoria. After being held in check Saturday in a 2-1 shootout loss to Fresno, Alaska's 2005 ECHL All-Star Game representative provided two more assists as the Aces edged the Falcons 4-3 in a shootout Sunday. He continues to lead the league with 37 goals, 10 more than any other player, and ranks fifth overall in the ECHL scoring race with 59 points.
On behalf of Minard, a case of pucks will be donated to an Anchorage area youth hockey organization by In Glas Co, the exclusive puck supplier for the ECHL. In Glas Co has donated over 10,000 pucks to youth hockey organizations since 2000-01.
The Aces, 34-15-6 overall, are unbeaten in their last 10 games (8-0-2), with their last loss coming February 5. The season-long unbeaten streak (three shy of the club record) has propelled Alaska into first place heading into this weekend's three-game series against Long Beach, who trails the Aces by just one point. The series opens Friday and Saturday game set for 7:15 p.m., while the Sunday finale will begin at 5:05 p.m. The two teams split a pair of games in Long Beach back in November.
All three games against the Ice Dogs (34-16-5) will be made available via video webcast on a pay-per-view basis at www.alaskaaces.com. Live coverage of all Alaska games on KFQD and B2 Networks begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off. For information on purchasing 2005-06 season tickets, please call 258-ACES.
