Melendez Tosses Complete Game in Win
June 5, 2009 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release
SAUGET, IL - Moises Melendez tossed the second complete game for the Florence Freedom in the past three days as they downed the Gateway Grizzlies 3-2 Friday night at GCS Ballpark.
Melendez and the Freedom needed a little bit of help from their counterparts as they managed only six hits, all singles, against Grizzlie pitching. The Grizzlies were happy to oblige.
With Gateway leading 2-1 in the top of the seventh inning and two gone, Steve Pickerell bounced a ball to shortstop Alex Kerins which should have ended the inning. Instead the shortstop booted the ball allowing Justin Pickett to move to second, Pickerell to first and the inning to continue.
Now with runners at first and second, Grizzlie pitching walked three straight batters to force in the game tying and game winning runs.
Melendez (3-1) did the rest as he struck out the side in the sixth, got an inning ending double play on a fly ball in the eighth and put the Grizzlies away one-two-three in the ninth to nail down the win. The left-hander finished with eight strikeouts while walking only one through nine innings.
Nathan Melek (1-2) pitched well for the Grizzlies but suffered the loss as he allowed three runs with only one being earned.
The two teams combined to commit six errors throughout the night.
Florence (9-5) and Gateway (5-9) will play game two of the series from GCS Ballpark on Saturday at 8:05 p.m. Catch the Freedom while they are on the road at Classic Country 106.7 FM WNKR.
