Rockford RiverHawks News Release
AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie Crushers scored three times in the first inning and went on to beat the Rockford RiverHawks, 7-3, on Friday.
Kevin Skogley and Brian Chambers combined to six-hit the RiverHawks, whose two-game winning streak ended. Half the hits came from Jason James, who was 3-for-4 and moved to seven hits shy of Ben Fjelland's all-time RiverHawks record of 311.
The Crushers scored three two-out runs in the bottom of the first inning. Tim Binkoski singled in two and Gordon Gronkowski scored on the front end of a delayed double steal-error combination.
In the top of the second, Jono Brooks drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, but the RiverHawks stranded a man at third. Rockford left six men on base, four in scoring position.
The RiverHawks' last rally was in the eighth, when they scored on a Doug Sanders RBI single and a Matt Mazurek pinch-hit RBI groundout to make the score 6-3. Binkoski drove in an insurance run in the Lake Erie half of the eighth.
Skogley (1-0) pitched 7 1/3 innings for the win. Brian Chambers got the last five outs and earned his second save. Rockford starter Rob Neigebauer (0-2) gave up six runs over 6 2/3 innings.
The series continues at 6:05 p.m. Saturday. The game is not scheduled for broadcast locally.
