
Beach Bums Earn a 11-7 Victory

EVANVILLE, Ind. - The Traverse City Beach Bums used the big inning to knock off the Evansville Otters 11-7 in the opener of a three-game set on Friday night.
Traverse City plated a run in the first to take a 1-0 early edge. Corey Whiting drew a walk to begin the contest and promptly stole both second and third. He came in to score when Mike Epping grounded out.
The Otters tied the score in the second inning in a similar manner. Jeremy Strack reached on an infield single to begin the inning, stole second, and went to third when the throw went into center. He scored on a groundout.
Three third inning runs chased Evansville starter Brian Oates and put the Beach Bums ahead 4-1. Bryan Frew drove home Corey Whiting with a single and Patrick Perry drove in two runs with a single. Evansville pulled within 4-2 by scoring in the bottom of the frame.
The Beach Bums batted around and plated five runs in the fifth inning to match their best output in an inning this season. Mike Victor doubled home Mike Epping to score the first run, and Patrick Perry followed with a double to score two more. Corey Whiting doubled home two with two outs to finish the scoring.
Evansville clawed back into the game with four runs in the sixth against Steve Roberts in his final inning. Roberts threw six innings and struck out four to tally his first win of the season. Kyle Touchatt, Jared Locke, and Jeff Williams finished the game on the hill.
Traverse City accounted for the final margin by scoring two runs in the seventh. Bryan Frew drove in a run with an fielder's choice and Mike Epping plated another run with a sacrifice fly.
The Beach Bums totaled 12 hits in the contest. Corey Whiting was selected as the Beach Bums Player of the Game after going 3-for-3 at the plate with two walks, two runs scored, two RBI, and a franchise record four stolen bases to fall one shy of the league record. Patrick Perry had two hits and drove in four runs.
The Beach Bums have an off day tomorrow. The series with Evansville will continue with a twi-night doubleheader on Sunday. Game one begins at 1:05 pm and pits RHP David Nathanson (0-2, 3.44) against Evansville RHP John Ducey (0-2, 4.35). The second contest is slated for 7:05 pm and pits RHP Kevin Reese (1-0, 4.91) for the Beach Bums opposite Evansville's RHP Rashad Ford (0-1, 5.59). Both games will be nine innings in length and can be heard on The Fox FM.
