Lake Erie Crushers News Release

Avon, OH - The Lake Erie Crushers parlayed a terrific starting pitching performance by Kevin Skogley with some timely hitting as they beat the Rockford RiverHawks 7-3 on Friday night at All Pro Freight Stadium.

Lake Erie jumped on Rockford early with three runs in the first inning as Tim Binkoski delivered a two run single and then Gordon Gronkowski scored a run thanks to an error on an attempted double steal. "You always want to jump out early and we did," said Crusher manager John Massarelli. "You want to get to the starting pitcher within the first 25 pitches, somewhere in the middle 50-60 pitches and in the end."

Gronkowski would strike in the third inning with a run-scoring double and then would eventually be brought home on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Davis. Lake Erie would tack on single runs in the seventh and eighth innings on a Drew Saylor RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Binkoski.

But the story of the night was Skogley, who earned his first win of the season by going seven and a third innings allowing three runs on six hits with five strikeouts. "I'll pitch anyday with this defense behind me," said Skogley. "I felt like I could pitch quick and put it over the plate "

Brian Chambers worked the final inning and two-thirds as Lake Erie snapped a two game losing streak.

The same two teams will meet tomorrow night as the series continues at All Pro Freight Stadium. Brent Lysander will make the start for Lake Erie against Rockford's Jay Monti.
