Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Charleston, WV (May 21, 2009) - Kyle McPherson held the Lakewood offense in check on Thursday night at Appalachian Power Park, allowing just a run on four hits over six and two-thirds, as West Virginia avoided the sweep with a 6-1 victory over the BlueClaws.
West Virginia scored five times in the third inning and never looked back. Josue Peley began the inning with a walk, and after a pair of Lakewood errors loaded the bases, Chase D'Arnaud singled in Peley to plate the first run. Bobby Spain followed with a base hit to plate two more runs, Erik Huber drove in the next run on a single and Marcus Davis's groundout plated the final run of the inning.
Zach Collier doubled to begin the fifth inning and scored Lakewood's lone run on Jeremy Hamilton's sacrifice fly. Peley ripped a two out single in the bottom of the sixth inning and scored the final run of the game on Greg Picart's double.
McPherson (3-1) earned the victory in his finest start of the season, snagging his second win of the home stand. Jesus Sanchez (1-3) allowed six runs on nine hits over six innings and was tagged with the loss. Owen Brolsma and Ramon Aguero combined to toss two and a third scoreless innings of relief. The Power pitching staff lowered its earned run average from 5.09 to 4.68 during the eight game home stand, and issued just eight walks during that stretch as well.
West Virginia improved to 14-26 after the victory, and the BlueClaws fell to 23-16 with the loss. D'Arnaud and Picart paced the Power with two hits a piece. D'Arnaud went 10-for-23 during the home stand with seven runs and five RBI. West Virginia ended the eight game homer with a 5-3 record.
West Virginia will begin a four game series with the Lake County Captains at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio on Friday night. Right hander Gabriel Alvarado (2-2, 5.23) will start for the Power and the Captains will counter with left hander T.J. McFarland (2-2, 4.01). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM.
