Hickory Crawdads News Release
The Delmarva Shorebirds scored an unearned run in the 6th inning, then made it stand up as they defeated the Hickory Crawdads 1-0 at L.P. Frans Stadium Thursday night.
After losing the first two games in the series, Delmarva (19-18) earned a split in the four game series with Hickory (20-20) by winning their second straight game. The game marked the end to Hickory's eight-game home stand as they finished at 4-4.
With one out in the sixth inning, Joe Mahoney reached first as Hickory pitcher Carlos Pimentel misplayed a ground ball between the mound and first base for an error. Elvin Polanco followed the error with a line single to center to advance Mahoney to second. After a fly ball to deep right field by Ron Welty moved Mahoney to third, Tyler Kolodny lined a single to left to plate Mahoney.
The Shorebirds trio of Rick Zagrone (4-3), Joe Esposito, and Brandon Cooney held the Crawdads offense to three hits on the night. Zagrone pitched six innings of two-hit baseball, striking out ten while walking three. Esposito allowed one hit over two innings.
Hickory had only one runner reach second base, leading to Hickory's only offensive threat of the night in the ninth inning. With one out, Cooney walked Mike Bianucci, then hit with a pitch Matt West to place runners at first and second base. However, Cooney got Timmy Rodriguez to line out to right field and induced pinch hitter Jared Bolden to ground out to short to end the game.
For the Crawdads, Pimentel (2-2) took the hard luck loss, allowing the one run on six hits and a walk, striking out six Shorebirds in 6.2 innings. Tyler Tufts retired all seven men he faced in relief.
Hickory begins an eight game road trip Friday night, facing the Hagerstown Suns for the first of a four game series, followed by four at Delmarva.
Fans can listen to the game at 92.1 FM WMNC and on hickorycrawdads.com with Andrew Buchbinder providing the play-by-play.
