Idaho Steelheads News Release
Long Beach, California - Steelheads' captain D'Arcy McConvey recorded his second hat trick in the last four games, as the Steelheads blasted the Ice Dogs, 5-1, at Long Beach Arena on Friday night.
The Steelheads (41-21-7) are now a season-high, 20 games over .500. The victory was also their 21st road win, as they set a new club mark for victories away from home.
For the second straight game, the Ice Dogs (35-25-9) struck first, as Cory Urquhart tallied at 3:27 of the opening period. Urquhart fired a shot from the left circles that beat Steve Silverthorn (25 saves) cleanly. Forward Lucas Lawson and defenseman Derrick Martin grabbed the assists on Urquhart's 24th of the season.
At 10:21 of the stanza, McConvey tied the game at one, while the Steelheads were on a four-on-three power play. Defenseman Tyler Kindle sent the puck to Marty Flichel who fired a one-timer. Ice Dogs' goaltender Olivier Michaud stopped the offering, but McConvey slipped home the rebound for his 36th of the season.
The shots in the first period favored the Ice Dogs at 11-7.
The Steelheads netted the only two goals in the second period, as McConvey's second of the evening and 37th of the campaign put the Steelheads in front for the first time. Dan Hacker sent him the puck as the Steelheads moved into the Ice Dogs zone on the right wing side. McConvey looked off the defense before ripping a shot into the top shelf for his seventh goal against the Ice Dogs this season.
Defenseman Jeremy Mylymok extended the Steelheads lead to 3-1 with a man advantage goal at 15:50 of the middle period. Rookie Andy Contois sent a pass to the point, where Mylymok wasted no time in burying his fifth of the year. Fellow rookie Greg Rallo also drew a helper.
McConvey picked up his third of the evening, scoring on the power play at 3:03. Kindle and David Bararuk set up his ECHL-leading 38th of the season. For Kindle, it was his 100th professional point, while Bararuk extended his scoring streak to a season-high, nine games.
Flichel rounded out the scoring with his 27th of the season at 7:14 of the third. Matt Reid and Jarad Bourassa got the assists. Flichel's even-strength marker signaled the end of Michaud's evening, as he was pulled in favor of Greg Hewitt (2 saves) for the second straight game.
The final shots were 26-25 in favor of the Ice Dogs, as the Steelheads won for the sixth time in seven tries against Long Beach. Tonight was the final meeting between these two clubs in the regular season.
The Steelheads return to action on Saturday, April 1, as they begin a three-game series with the San Diego Gulls. The puck drops at 8:05 p.m. MST. All the action can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1350 AM, "The Ticket," beginning approximately 20 minutes before the drop of the puck.
