Atlanta Gladiators News Release
The Gwinnett Gladiators remain one point shy of clinching the ECHL's American Conference and the South Division titles as they dropped a 6-2 decision to the Augusta Lynx on Friday night in Augusta. With the loss, the Gladiators fall to 47-14-7 on the year.
Augusta took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Jay Latulippe 11:03 into the opening period. Jumping out of the penalty box and taking a pass from Mike Erickson, Latulippe beat Gladiators netminder Adam Berkhoel up under the cross bar through a screen for the marker. Sam Ftorek also collected an assist on the goal.
Nicolas Corbeil beat Berkhoel on a breakaway to give the Lynx a 2-0 lead 12:51 into the first period. Anthony Battaglia fed Corbeil behind the Gladiators defense to pick up an assist and set up the goal. Ken Scuderi also had a helper on the marker.
Augusta pushed its lead to 3-0 just 5 seconds in to their first power play chance of the contest, 5:01 into the second period. Brian Passmore redirected Chris Leinweber's slap shot from the point for the goal. Ftorek also had a helper on the marker.
Lee Jacobson extended the Lynx lead to four goals with five minutes left in the second period, ripping a slap shot from the right wing point past Berkhoel for the tally. Mike Erickson moved the puck up the wing to Jacobson after digging it out of the skates of Ryan Lang off the draw for the assist.
Gwinnett got on the board with just two seconds left in the second period on Brian Teixeira's 4th goal of the season, picking up a rebound along the goal line and putting it back behind Augusta netminder Jason Wolfe for the marker. John Awe collected an assist on the goal for Gwinnett.
The Lynx got the late second period goal by the Gladiators back just 55 seconds in to the third period as Battaglia was able to punch a bouncing puck off a faceoff in the Gwinnett zone past Berkhoel for the marker.
Matt York beat Wolfe over the shoulder to the near post with a laser from the top of the right wing face off circle to cut the Augusta lead to 5-2. Cam Brown picked up an assist on the goal, feeding the puck back to the point for a waiting York. Also had an assist on the goal.
Mike Erickson pushed the Augusta lead back to four goals posting a power play goal for the Lynx with 1:30 left in the third period. Erickson ripped a snap shot from the slot past Berkhoel for the goal with B.J. Gaustad picking up an assist on the marker.
The ECHL's top ranked power play unit was held scoreless for the second consecutive night, as Gwinnett did not capitalize on the man advantage on seven chances. Augusta went 2-for-7 on the man advantage. After collecting his first shutout of the season, Berkhoel finished with 31 saves in the loss for the Gladiators.
