Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

EDINBURG- Fidel Hernandez doubled and scored the winning run against his old team in a 2-run sixth inning rally as the McAllen Thunder beat the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings 3-2 Wednesday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

Hernandez, traded before the game to McAllen for infielder Roberto Rodriguez, collected the second of three straight hits off righthander Cole Stephens (5-4), who lost his first game against McAllen this season despite recording a quality start allowing three runs in six innings. Nelson Teilon drove in Yaser Gomez with the tying run with a single to then Henry Gonzales brought home Hernandez with a groundout to give McAllen the 3-2 advantage they never relinquished.

The deal was one of four transactions McAllen would make on the day, most notably dealing infielder Antoin Gray to Fort Worth for a player to be named later. In dealing Rodriguez to the WhiteWings they gave Rio Grande Valley their leader in stolen bases (16) for the WhiteWings leader in runs batted in (44).

Rodriguez played second base for the WhiteWings, collecting a drag bunt single and scoring a run. Hernandez had two hits in his first game for McAllen.

Alex Smith ended his pitching woes against the WhiteWings by allowing only one earned run in eight innings and scattering seven hits. Smith, a lefthander from the University of Virginia, came into the game with an 0-2 record against the WhiteWings but was able to change speeds to earn the victory and end Ruddy Yan's 16 game hitting streak.

The WhiteWings begin an eight game home stand tonight when the San Angelo Colts come to Harlingen Field to begin a four game series at 7:05 p.m. WhiteWings ace Celson Polanco (8-4) pitches against fellow righthander Mike Hart (5-1).
