Cats Comeback Not Enough, Split Series with First Place Edinburg

Fort Worth Cats News Release

Fort Worth right fielder Chuck Caufield was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in on an eighth-inning single but seemed to be the only Cats' hitter to show up in Wednesday's 7-5 loss to the Edinburg RoadRunners at LaGrave Field in Fort Worth, TX. Caufield's single came in a three-run Cats eighth inning but could not come up with anymore late-inning heroics.

Edinburg starter Matison Smith (7-4) seemed to have Fort Worth's number through his first seven innings on Wednesday, only allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Closer Paul Koss silenced the Cats in the ninth for his fifth save of the season.

Smith's Fort Worth counterpart, Casey Russell (1-2) had much more trouble in the early innings allowing all three of his earned runs and four of his five hits allowed in only the first two innings of his 4 1/3 inning outing. The RoadRunners did the most damage to reliever Rick Bauer who allowed three runs on seven hits in his two innings of relief for Kane Holbrooks.

Edinburg left fielder Stantrel Smith was a nightmare for the Cats' pitching staff with a perfect 4-for-4 performance with one run batted in and a run scored. The RoadRunners had 16 hits total in the game.

With the win, the RoadRunners extend their lead in the United League standings over the Cats to four games.

The RoadRunners will return home for a four game series with the McAllen Thunder that begins Thursday night at 7:05 pm. The Cats will travel to Abilene for a six game set with the Prairie Dogs that also kicks off Thursday night.
