Roadrunners Earn Split with Cats

FORT WORTH, Texas - The Edinburg Roadrunners held off a late surge from the Fort Worth Cats for the 7-5 victory earning the series split Wednesday night at LaGrave Field.

Edinburg held a six-run lead as the Cats scored four late runs in the seventh and eighth innings but the bullpen held on for the win to extend their lead for first place to two and one half games.

The Roadrunners (43-29) got RBI singles from Wilmer Pino and Derek Perren in the top of the first to grab the 2-0 lead.

A sacrifice fly from Stantrel Smith in the top of the second allowed Luis Sumoza to score extending Edinburg's lead 3-0.

Fort Worth (39-33) got on the board in the bottom of the second. After Chuck Caufield hit a two-out double, Chad Gabriel followed with an RBI single that made it 3-1 Roadrunners.

In the top of the sixth, Sumoza added to Edinburg's lead with an RBI single that drove in Felix Molina making it 4-1.

Edinburg got RBI hits from Vincent Blue, Pino, and Carlos Hereaud in the top of the seventh off of reliever Rick Bauer that extended their lead to 7-1.

After the Cats picked up a run in the bottom of the seventh, they added three more in the bottom of the eighth to cut Edinburg's lead 7-5.

Matison Smith (7-4) pitched eight innings and allowed five runs on eight hits and struck out four for his seventh win of the season.

Paul Koss came on in the bottom of the ninth and pitched a scoreless inning for his fifth save of the season giving Edinburg the 7-5 victory.

The Roadrunners return home for a four-game series against the McAllen Thunder starting Thursday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
