Abilene Prairie Dogs News Release

SAN ANGELO, T.X. - For the 10th time this season, the Dogs went to extra innings, and for the second time this season, the Dogs went to 14 innings. On Monday night in San Angelo, it took five pitchers and 7 1/3 innings of relief from the Prairie Dogs' bullpen before Abilene finally outlasted the Colts, 6-4 at Foster Field.

With the game tied at four after 13 innings, the Colts were forced to turn to centerfielder Ronnie Gaines to pitch the top of the 14th. Gaines, the seventh Colts' hurler of the night, was making his second career appearance on the hill.

Wilson Batista worked a walk to start the 14th and stole second. When Kyle Nichols struck out, the ball slipped past catcher Michael Pair and the Batista moved to third with one out. Joe Weik then reached for a two-strike pitch and dunked it into center field, scoring Batista from third and giving the Dogs a 5-4 edge. After Weik was caught stealing, Geraldo Valentin and Danny Gonzalez strung together consecutive doubles to build a 6-4 lead.

The two-run 14th marked the second time that Abilene scored in extras. In the 12th, Eddie Browne worked a leadoff walk. Later in the inning, Nichols knocked him in with a single to right-center to give Abilene a 4-3 lead.

Derrick Dingeman took the hill in relief to start the bottom of the ninth inning, and, after firing three scoreless frames, the Dogs asked the young righty to protect the one-run lead in the bottom of the 12th - his fourth inning of the night.

Dingeman got the first batter, Michael Pair, to pop out to shortstop to start the bottom of the 12 th. But Danny Hernandez and Mark Ramos punched singles to put runners on first and second with two outs. Daryl Jones then bounced a run-scoring single through the middle, tying the game at four and sending it to the 13th inning.

The Prairie Dogs scored on Wilson Batista's 12th homer of the season, a two-run shot that gave Abilene a 2-0 lead in the first inning. San Angelo answered with single runs in both the first and second innings to tie the game at two.

In the fourth, Jason Crosland laced a home run to give the Colts their only lead of the game, 3-2.

Jason Martin knotted the contest yet again when he roped an R.B.I. single to score Bryan Fogle in the seventh.

Freddy Flores appeared for the second time this season with the Dogs and tossed 6 2/3 innings, allowing only four hits and three runs while striking out five. After yielding the lead on Jason Crosland's homer with one out in the fourth, Flores retired the next 10 batters he faced before giving way to Scott Vander Weg with two outs and a runner on first in the seventh.

The Prairie Dogs and Colts finalize their four-game series with a 7:05 first pitch at Foster Field on Wednesday night. Hear the game on 106.9 KLGD or on the internet at abileneprairiedogs.com beginning with the First Financial Pregame Show at 6:55.
