Abilene Prairie Dogs News Release

SAN ANGELO, Texas - For a while on Wednesday night it looked like the Prairie Dogs would win a Foster Field for the fifth straight time. However, those hopes went up in flames with Jason Crosland's tie-breaking, R.B.I. single in the bottom of the eighth, leading San Angelo to a 5-4 win at home.

After last night's 14-inning marathon, Scott Vander Weg was one of the few fresh arms in the bullpen on Wednesday night. After firing a scoreless sixth, Vander Weg came back out for the bottom of the seventh. Justin McDavid - the first baseman's first appearance with the Colts - struck out before Cory Patton singled. Two batters later, Crosland snapped the deadlock with a run-scoring knock to left field, giving the Colts their first lead of the game.

The first pitch of the night from San Angelo starter Brian Henschel resulted in Jason Martin's sixth homer of the season, a long blast over the fence in left to give the Dogs an early 1-0 lead.

The Colts came back to tie the game with a run in the bottom of the first.

In the top of the second, Chris Caves doubled and scored when Eddie Brown grounded out to third. But the Colts bounced right back with a run in the bottom of the third on an R.B.I. double from Cory Patton to knot the game at two.

Matt Larkins started and lasted five innings for Abilene. The rookie allowed eight hits and four runs (two earned) on the way to a no decision. Aiming to help his team overcome a two-run deficit in the fifth, Ronnie Gaines reached on an error to start the inning and came around to score one of two unearned runs in the frame, creating a 4-4 deadlock.

The glare of Abilene's weary bullpen shone when Billy Petrick - Friday's scheduled starter - pitched the bottom of the eighth. Petrick - who has now faced the Colts in four consecutive outings - retired the side in order on just nine pitches.

The Prairie Dogs return to Walt Driggers Field on Thursday night as the open an eight-game series with the Fort Worth Cats. If you cannot make it to the park, hear the game on both 106.9 KLGD or on the internet at abileenprairiedogs.com.
