
Maylan Leads Stingrays Past Gladiators

North Charleston, S.C. - Forward Justin Maylan netted two goals and forward Lindsay Sparks added two assists to help the South Carolina Stingrays (1-0-0-0) defeat the Gwinnett Gladiators (0-1-0-0) 3-1 at the Carolina Ice Palace Friday evening in preseason action.
Maylan kicked off the scoring early in the first period slipping a shot under the blocker of Gladiators netminder Chris Rawlings (L, 22 saves on 25 shots) from between the faceoff circles at 2:31. Defenseman Tom Janosz and Sparks picked up assists.
The Gladiators responded with a tally from forward Kevin Veilleux 2:33 into the middle frame knocking a rebound past Stingrays goaltender Jeff Jakaitis (W, 16 saves on 17 shots) with help from defenseman Jonathan Narbonne and forward Kurtis Bartliff. Forward Chris Langkow reclaimed the lead for the Stingrays on the man-advantage at 16:44 ripping a shot under the blocker of Rawlings along the bottom of the left-wing circle. Defenseman Jeremy Price and forward Chad Painchaud claimed the assists.
Maylan buried his second goal of the contest 1:44 into the third period to complete the game scoring from Sparks and defenseman Zack Currie. The Stingrays finished the contest 1-for-5 on the power play while the Gladiators went 0-for-4.
The Stingrays wrap up the preseason tomorrow night at 7:05 against the Greenville Road Warriors at the Ice Palace. In three seasons, the Stingrays are 1-1-1-1 in four preseason meetings against their in-state rivals. The lone win came last October in a 3-2 overtime victory at the Ice Palace.
The Stingrays kick off their 21st season of hockey in the Lowcountry on Saturday, October 19 against the defending Kelly Cup Champion Reading Royals at 7:35 p.m. in Reading, Pennsylvania and celebrate Opening Night, Stingrays Alumni Game, Zooperstars! and 2013-14 schedule giveaway presented by Savage Law Firm at the North Charleston Coliseum on Saturday, October 26 against their in-state rivals, the Greenville Road Warriors, at 7:05 p.m.
Hall of Fame players such as Jason Fitzsimmons, Dave Seitz, Brett Marietti, Nate Kiser, Rob Concannon and Matt Scherer along with fan-favorites Johann Kroll, Trevor Johnson and more return to the Coliseum ice for a pregame Alumni Game before the Stingrays battle the Greenville Road Warriors later that night.
