Countdown to Face-Off: K-Wings vs Komets Preseason

October 11, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release

For the first-time since the 2008-09 season, when they were in the International Hockey League, the Kalamazoo Wings and Fort Wayne Komets will meet in the preseason. Last season, Kalamazoo went 8-7-1-0 versus the archrivals.

Beginning the preseason in impressive fashion, the K-Wings received goals from five different players to defeat the Toledo Walleye 5-1 on Wednesday night. Tonight is the middle of three preseason games for the K-Wings, who will conclude the preseason tomorrow night in Toledo.

Like Kalamazoo, Fort Wayne is playing the second of three preseason games. On Wednesday, the Komets used a three-goal outburst in the third period to defeat the Wheeling Nailers 4-3 at the WesBanco Arena. The Komets and Nailers will wrap up their preseason slates tomorrow night in Fort Wayne.

Feels Like the First Time

This evening is just the second-time in the K-Wings 40-year history that they played a home game in The Annex and the third-time overall they have played a home game outside of Wings Stadium. The first-time they played outside of Wings Stadium was back in 2001, when the K-Wings played the first-ever Pink Ice Game in The Annex; last season the K-Wings played the Toledo Walleye in a preseason game at Wings West.

Kattelus and Polasek Return

Yesterday, the K-Wings added forward Eric Kattelus and defenseman Adam Polasek to their training camp roster. Kattelus was reassigned to Kalamazoo by the Chicago Wolves, while Polasek was reassigned by the Vancouver Canucks.

Paving the Way

Forward Dan Dries recorded two points in the K-Wings 5-1 victory on Wednesday. Dries earned an assist on the Kalamazoo's first goal and also scored the K-Wings game-winner on a shorthanded marker.

Picking Up Where He Left Off Goaltender Joel Martin picked up where he left off a season ago. Martin stopped all 18 shots he faced in a 30:35 minutes to record to victory on Wednesday night.
