Bulls Drop Preseason Opener to Bakersfield

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The San Francisco Bulls scored twice in the second period, but ultimately lost 3-2 to the Bakersfield Condors in the first preseason game of 2013-14, Thursday night at the Cow Palace. Returning players Dylan King and Kris Belan scored for the Bulls in the loss.

The Bulls out-played the Condors in the opening period, but failed to beat Tyler Bunz on 13 shots. San Francisco held a 13-4 edge in shots through 20 minutes.

In the second period, a flurry of action saw the Bulls score twice in 38 seconds. First, King slipped one under Bunz at 3:29. Christian Ouellet earned the lone assist on the play. At 4:07, Ouellet fed Belan in the slot for a high shot over Bunz's glove. Andrew Eastman also earned an assist on the play. Bakersfield struck back to even the score later in the period. Daniel Sabotka tallied at 6:08 and Blair Macauley tied the game with 6:41 left in the frame.

The third period was a stalemate, with neither team giving an inch. Finally, Gary Steffes was able to slide the puck under Bulls netminder J.P. Anderson with less than a minute to play. Goaltender Paul Karpowich earned the victory, after relieving Bunz in the second period.

The Bulls return to action on Saturday to host the Stockton Thunder at 7:30 pm at the Cow Palace. The final preseason game will take place on Sunday at 4 pm in Bakersfield.
