INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks defeated the Rapid City Rush 3-1 Friday night at Independence Events Center in a crucial Turner Conference showdown. The Mavs now take over third place in the Central Hockey Leauge's Turner Conference standings by one point over the Rapid City Rush with 11 games remaining in the regular season. Sebastien Thinel netted the go-ahead goal with two minutes remaining in regulation and Kris Hogg added two assists on the night to extend his points streak to six games.
Missouri and Rapid City entered the second period in a scoreless tie. The Mavericks could not convert a five-on-three power play halfway through the period and the teams went scoreless until the 18:48 mark, when Brandon Smith buried a rebound to put the Mavs up 1-0. After two periods, the Mavericks held a 26-18 shot advantage over the Rush. Kris Hogg extended his point streak to six games with an assist on the goal. Patrick Schafer was also credited with an assist on the goal.
Colin Circelli tied the game just three minutes into the third period, catching Mavs goaltender Charlie Effinger out of position. The Mavericks rallied late though, getting a goal from Sebastien Thinel with two minutes left in regulation. Hogg added his second assist of the night on the goal. Andrew Courtney scored an empty-net goal with 37 seconds to go, sealing the 3-1 victory.
Charlie Effinger finished the night with 32 saves on 33 shots. With the win, the Mavericks now move back into third place in the Turner Conference, with a one-point lead over the Rush.
The Mavs are back on the ice at Independence Events Center this Tuesday night for another big Turner Conference showdown with the first place Evansville IceMen. The Mavs then travel to the Dallas/Fort Worth area next weekend for a pair of games with the Allen Americans Friday and Texas Brahmas on Saturday.
