MOLINE, Ill. = Jamie Milam scored twice and Leo Thomas (one goal and two assists) and Bobby Chaumont (three assists) produced three points apiece as the Fort Wayne Komets dropped the host Quad City Mallards 7-2 Friday night. With loss, the fifth place Mallards dropped to 30-23-2 (62 points) and finished the evening four points behind the fourth place Rapid City Rush in the race for the final Turner Conference playoff spot.
Stephon Thorne backhanded the game's opening goal home from the doorstep at 2:03 of the first period. The Mallards rebounded when Brandon Marino pounced on a loose puck in the slot to tie the game at one with his league-leading thirty-fifth goal at 8:56 of the first, but the Mallards- who dressed just 14 skaters due to injury and illness- would have little to cheer about the rest of the way.
"We're beat up and bashed up," said Mallards coach and general manager David Bell. "We started the game two [players] under the limit and even before they dropped the puck there were probably three guys who also shouldn't have played. It was tough."
Jesse Bennefield put the Komets on top for good and triggered a run of five straight Fort Wayne goals by banking the puck in off a Mallard to snap the 1-1 deadlock at 16:16 of the opening frame.
Two second period Komet goals turned what had been a one-goal Fort Wayne lead into a 4-1 advantage. Frankie DeAngelis's back door power play goal made it 3-1 at 10:18 of the second. At 17:21 Chris Auger stole the puck down low in the Mallard zone and walked into the goalmouth to score the fourth Fort Wayne goal.
Thomas skated into the Mallard goalmouth to score the Komets' fifth- and the first of four goals between the two teams in a span of four minutes and fifty-three seconds- at 11:49 of the third period. The Komets were shorthanded when Milam buried a rebound to make it 6-1 at 13:21 of the third. Mickey Lang scored the second Mallard goal from the top of the left wing circle at 15:38, but Milam's close range power play goal would cap off the Fort Wayne victory just 64 seconds later.
The Mallards return to action on home ice tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. against the Evansville IceMen. The Stanley Cup comes to the Quad Cities for tomorrow night's game.
